ZIQYM A'ITUFYNEY IN CQMPFAZNYB. QF MEGH NJCSVILLE', N YORK, Q RBOBATIIO N 0F O MATTRESS-GUARD.
Specifica i n Letter lat n Patented Jan. 19,1915.
Application filed February 19, 1 91 2. Serial No. 678,663.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HOMER EoKnRsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mechanicsville, county of Saratoga, and State of New York, haveinvented certain newand useful Improvements in Mattress-Guards, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to such improvements and consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed.
Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. bimilar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a view in perspective of a spring-frame showing a mattress held thereon by means of my improved guards. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of one of the guards detached. Fig. 3 is a verticalcross-section taken transversely of one of the ends of the spring-frame showing the mattress-guard in upright position. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the guard in folded position.
The principal object of the invention is to hold a mattress from displacement on a spring-frame as in a bed or cot, without adding materially to the bulk of the device in shipment.
Another object of the invention is to adapt the device, consisting of the spring-frame and guard, for shipment without the mattress, in such a manner that the guard does not add materially to the bulk of the springframe.
In carrying out my invention, I provide at the opposite ends of a spring-frame a folding guard adapted to engage the sides as well as the ends of the mattress adjacent to its corners, whereby the mattress is held from displacement in all directions horizontally.
Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1, is the spring-frame having the end-pieces, 2, shown formed of angle-irons, upon which frame is stretched the spring, 3. The mattress, 4, shown made in two sections, is adapted to rest upon the spring slightly overhanging the end-pieces, 2
At each end of the spring-frame I provide a U-shaped guard, 5, adapted to receive the neighboring end of the mattress,
the ends or wings, 6,0f the guard being adapted to embrace the sides of the mattress adjacent to its corners. The guard is foldably mounted upon the end piece, 2, of the frame'by means of a plurality of 'uprights, 7, having attenuated offsets, 8, adapted respectively to occupy apertures, 9, in the horizontal flange of the end-piece, 2, and when the guard is supported in an upright position as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, to bear at their ends against the under side of the end-piece to form a resistance or stop to limit the outward movement of the guard and to enable it to resist the thrust of an endwise movement of the mattress. The at- I irnn s'ratrus rarunr own. 1
some. EcKEnsom or MEQHANIGSVILLE, YORK. essteuon To ECKERSON BED- tenuated portions, 8, of the upright, 7 are so formed that they can be moved through the apertures, 9, to permit the guard to fold over upon and against the spring-frame as shown in Fig. 4:, for convenience in shippmg.
When the guard is folded over upon the spring-frame the body of the guard rests flatly upon the spring and its wings, 6, cmbrace the sides of the spring and come within the dimensions of the spring-frame, so that the guard addspractically nothing to the bulk of the package for shipment.
The uprights are of such length that the guard is supported at a point midway of the height of the mattress, so that if the mattress and spring-frame are shipped together, the guard may be left in its upright position without adding to the bulk of the package.
In Figs. 3 and f, the attenuated portions, 8, of the uprights, 7, are shown with heads, 10, formed thereon sufficiently large to pre vent their withdrawal through their re spective apertures, 9. Said heads may, however, be omitted, permitting the guard to be removed from the end of the springframe, if desired. 1 i
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The combination with a frame having a mattresssupporting spring; of a U-shaped guard foldably mounted upon the frame foldable on top of the spring and adapted in raised position to embrace the sides of the mattress at its end and in folded position to extend down on opposite sides of said spring.
2. The combination with a mattress-sup porting frame provided with apertures in its end; of a guard adapted to engage an no end of the mattress; and guard-supporting uprights having attenuated offset ends movable Within the respective apertures in said frame to permit the guard to be folded over upon the frame, and adapted to engage the under side of the frame to limit the outward movement of said guard.
3. The combination With a mattress-supporting frame provided with apertures in its end; of a guard adapted to engage an end of the mattress; and guard-supporting uprights having attenuated offset ends movable Within the respective apertures in said frame to permit the guard to be folded over upon the frame and adapted to engage the 5 under side of the frame to limit the outward movement of said guard, said attenuated portions having heads thereon to prevent their Withdrawal through said-apertures.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto 20 set my hand this 15th day of February, 1912.
HOMER ECKERSON.
