Be it known that I, CHARLES VALLONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Inrrovement in Sliding-Side Folding Cribs or eds, of which the liollowing 'is a. specification.
This invention relates more )articularly to sliding-side folding cribs or hedsteads.
Cribs are ordinarily provided with' side frames which can be secured in a normal raised position, in which they serve to confine the child in the crib, and can be lowered from this position to lessen ythe exertionL of lifting the child into and out of the crib or to enable the crib to be placed alongside of a bed without an intervening barrier between the child and the occupant of the bed. ln some cribs the sides are hinged to swing out wardly and downwardly from the normal raised position; but this construction is obj actionable, as considerable space is re aired at the sides of the cribwnen raising an lowering the side frames, thus making it impossible to operate the side frame While the crib is near to a wall, bed, or other object. That other type of crib in which the side frames slide vertically up and down into and out of the operative raised position is therefore the most desirable.
The primary object of this invention is to produce a crib which can be folded into comact form when not in use or for movin it from place to place and in which the side frames Will slide vertically up and down when the crib is set up.
Another object of the invention is to make a. folding crib of this sort of a light, strong, stable, and durable construction which can be manufactured at the minimum cost.
Still another object of the invention is to improve the construction of folding cribs in the respects hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.

When the crib issetfup for use, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the angle-bar side rails of the bottom rest upon the shorter upper links l), and the longer links D form inclined ljfraces between the bottom and end frames, se that the parts are held. rigid. The links enable the end frames to be swung under the bottom, es indicated by broken lines in Fig. 1, to the fold-- ed position shown in Fig. 5, in which they are subslantiall parallel with the bottom, ith t 1e other. This manner of hinging the end frames is known but in the construction Vshown the links are offset inwardly at d, near their connections with the bottom rails, as shown in Figs. 4 and 8, while their outer ends lie close beside the columns of the end frames, and by reason of this arrangement the links for one end frame will pass inside of or between the links for the other end frame when folding the crib, and will thus allow the end frames to lie fiat, one upon the other beneath the bottom, as shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7, no matter which end frame is folded'under iirst. This is desirable, as persons unskilled in mechanical coiistructions can roperly fold the same without instruction or oss of time. In so far as the other features of the crib about to be described are concerned the end frames could be connected to the bottom in any other manner which would enable them to fold under the bottom.
E represents movable or pivoted guides or brackets connecting the side frames to the bottom, so that they can slide vertically and can also be folded or turned inwardly over `the bottom. There are four of these guidebrackets, one at each corner of the crib. In the construction shown (see especially Figs. 9-1'2) the guide-brackets have upright arms provided at their ulpper and lower ends with perforated lugs e, t i right rods c of the side frames pass and in which they are adapted to.`slide, 'and each ide-bracket has an inwardly-projecting orizontal arm e, provided at its inner en with a depending portion or extension, which passes through a slotf in the adjacent end rail of the bottom frame. A lateral lug or enlargement f Figs. `11 and 12, on the arm prevents the disengagement of the arm from the slot f. When the crib is set up for use, the horizontal arms of the eide-brackets lie horizontally on the end m5 while their upright arms stand vertically between the side columnsof the end frames outside of the side rails of the bottom, as shown in Figs. 9 and 11. In this position of the brackets their horizontal arms will bear of the end rails of the bottpm, and
on top their ugs f will bear against the under sides of said end rails, so lthat the brackets will be held steady. Thevside frames can then be easily ,slid vertically u and .down in the brackets, as described, t ie same as in the ordinary non-,folding sliding-side crib. The
horizontal arms can rock or turn in the slots j' in the bottom end rails, so that the brackets, with the side frames, can be turned or folded inwardly over the bottom, as shown in Figsw, 6, and 11. When the side frames are thus folded over the bottom, the horizontal arms of the giiideebrackets can slide vertically in their slots j', thereby permitting either side frame to be turned in beneath the other and also allowing the side frames to drop down iiat on the bottom when the matrough which the end p-y s of the bottom,4

The guide-brackets constructed and connected to the bottom as described produce a desirable and inexpensive construction; but the brackets could he differently constructed and otherwise connected to the crib, so that they can bc folded inwardly or turned inwardly and raised and lowered, as explained. Any suitable means can be employed for securing the side fralnes in the operative raised position. As shown, the projecting ends of the top bars of the side frames are notched at g and adapted to interlock with socket-pieces g' on the upper portions of the end frames. (See Figs. 1, 2, and 5.) When the side frames are engaged with the sockets, the end frames will be tied together at their upper ends, and the crib as a whole will be rigid and steady'. If desired, latches can be employed for holding the guide-brackets stationary or from swinging when slidinv the side frames vertically therein. A lato i for this purpose is shown at H in Figs. 9-13, consisting of a springhook projecting up, from the end rail of the bottom and adapted to snap over the horizontal arm of the guidebracket. An other suitable kind of-latcli could be emp oyed. Latchs I can also be used, if desired, to lock the side frames from slidin in the guidefbracketsA when the crib is` to be olded. The latches shown are pivoted to the upright arms of the guide-brackets and have hooks or slotted ends i, adapted to swing beneath the ends of the upright arms of the brackets and engage under collars 'i' on the end upright rods of the side fr ames. Before folding in the side frames over the bottom the latches are engaged under the'collars, as shown in Fig. 12, and they will their revent the side frames from slipping down in the brackets when holding the crib. These latches or other means for the same purpose can b e employed or not, as found expedient.
In the crib described the side frame can be raised and lowered vertically whenthe crib is l set up 'ust as in `the ordinary sliding-side non-fol ing cribs; but in addition they can be folded or turned inwardly and downwardly over the crib-bottom either directly thereon or at a sufficient distance above the bottom to accommodate the mattress and bedding.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a crib or bed, the combination of a bottom, side frames, and connections between said side frames and the crib structure constructed to allow said side frames to slide vertically and also to fold inwardly substantially parallel with said bottom, substantially as set forth.4
2. In a crib or'v bed, the combination of a' bottom, and-side frames connected tothe crib structure to raise and lower in a vertical plane and also to fold inwardly over the bottom, substantially as set forth.
3. In a crib or bed, the combination of a bottom, side frames, and guide devices on which said side frames are movable up and down vertically and which are movable to fold said side frames inwardly substantially perallel with said bottom, substantially as set forth.
4. In a crib or bed, the combination of a bottom, guide-brackets hinged. to seid bottom to swing inwardly over the same, and side frames which shde vertically on said guide-brackets, substantially as set forth.
5. In a crib or bed, the combination of a bottom, side frames, guide-brackets on which said side frames slide vertically and which are connected to said bottom to swiner inwardly over the same and also to fall and rise toward and from the bottom, whereby the side frames can lie horizontally close to the bottom or at a distance above the bottom, substantially as set forth.
6. In a crib or bed, the combination of a bottom, guide-brackets having horizontal arms hinged to said bottom and upright arms with guide-openings at their upper and lower ends, and side frames having vertical `rods which slide in said guide-openings, substantially as set forth.
7,. In a crib or bed, the combination of a bottom, guide-brackets having horizontal arms connected to said vbottom to swing,r and move toward and from said bottom, and upright guidearms, and side frames which slide vertically on 'said upright arms, substantially as set forth.
8. In a crib or bed, the combination of a bottom, side frames, guide devices on Which seid side frames are movable up and down vertically and which are movable to fold said side frames inwardly substantially parallel with said bottom, and means for releasabl holding said guide devices in normal posltion, substantially as set forth.
9. In a crib or bed, the combination of e bottom, side frames, guide devices on which said side frames are movable up and down vertically and which are movable to fold said side frames inwardly substantially parallel with said bottom, and means for releasably` holding said side frames from movement on said guide devices, substantially as set forth.
10. In a crib or bed, the combination of a bottom, end frames at opposite ends of said bottom, and swinging links connecting said end frames and bottom whereby said end frames can be folded one beneath the other substantially parallel with the bottom, said links for each end frame having offset portions at or near one end to allow the links for either end frame to move between the links for the other end frame, substantially as set forth.
