LOUIS RAKOWSKY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIG-NOR OF ONE-HALF TO ABRAHAM JOSSELSON, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING CRADLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May A, 1915.
Application filed May 9, 1913. Serial No. 766,516.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Louis RAKowsKY, a subject of the King of Sweden, and a resident of Pittsburgh, South Side, in the county of Allegheny and State ofv Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Cradles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a folding crib or cradle, and has for its object to form a cheap, simple and efficient crib or cradle which can be folded into a small and c0m pact form of the article to enable it to be carried for traveling, etc., or placed out of the way, such as under beds, etc., as well as one which will contain few parts and can be opened up or folded easily and quickly when desired.
To these ends my invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved crib or cradle, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved folding crib or cradle. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a crosssection on the line 33 Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. A is a side View of the crib or cradle showing the same in its closed or folded position.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the draw- As illustrated in the drawing A represents the crib or cradle which comprises the two ends 1 and the two sides 2, the ends being each formed into the upper and lower sections 1 and 1 respectively and such lower sections having the rockers 3 thereon. The cradle A is provided with the main frame B composing the side rails A and end rails i which are connected by the bearing posts 5 at each end of the same, and the two sections of the ends 1 and sides 2 are hinged or pivoted at 6 and 6 respectively in said posts.
When the cradle A is in its opened position and ready for use, as shown in Figs.
1, 2, and 3, the end sections 1 and l and sides 2 are turned or swung outwardly on their pivots 6 and 6, with such upper sections 1 resting against the ends of the sides 2, so that said sections and sides are held in place by hooks 7 pivoted on the side edges of said upper sections and engaging with pins 8 on the side faces of said sides 2, thereby maintaining the crib or cradle in an open position, while the lower sections 1 are held in place by means of a bar or rod 9 on each side of the cradle A, which is pivoted on the bottom of the side rails *1 at one end as at 9", and engages with a screw eye 10 on the inner face on each of said sections by means of the hook 9 on said bars.
When it is desired to close or fold up the cradle A all that is necessary is to unhook the hooks 7 from the pins 8 which will allow the sides 2 to be dropped down on their pivots 6 within the cradle, so that they will rest on and be supported by the end and side rails l and A of the cradle, and after this is accomplished the upper end sections 1' can be dropped down onto said sides through their pivots 6. The hooks 9 can now be unhooked from the screw eyes 10 to allow the lower end sections 1 to be raised or swung upwardly on their pivot pins 6 against the bottoms of the side rails 4- and such sections and the upper end sections 1 as well as the sides 2 are held together and in their closed or folded positions by the hooks 7 on such upper end sections engaging with the screw eyes 10 on such lower end sections, while the rods 9 can be moved on their pivots 9 and placed out of the way under the side rails by being hung or seated in the hooks 11 extending down from the bottoms of said side rails.
It will thus be seen that my improved folding crib or cradle can be used and operated by any unskilled person and when in its opened position will form a substantial and strong structure, as well as one which will be firmly and strongly braced, while when such crib or cradle is in its closed or folded position it will be evident that it will occupy a small and compact form or shape and all its parts will be held together and out of the way without liability of their becoming open or interfering with anything by reason of some of the parts being capable of double use. The crib or cradle contains few parts, can be easily and cheaply manufactured and when in its folded or closed position the mattress used with the same or other bed clothing can be stored, packed and held in the space formed by the lower end sections, sides and side and end rails of the crib or cradle.
Various modifications in the design, con struction and application of my improved crib or cradle may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is i A folding crib or cradle comprising a main frame supported in bearing blocks at each corner of the same, sides and upper and Copies of this patent may be obtained for lower end sections pivoted in said bearing blocks means on said lower sections for being engaged to hold said sections in their opened positions, and means on said upper sections for holding said sides and said upper sections in their open positions and for engaging with said first named means to hold said sides and both of said end sections LOUIS RAKOWVSKY.
