i which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a folding bed. One of the objects of the present nvention is to provide a simple, substantial,

cheaply manufactured folding bed, in which counterweights, springs, and the like may be entirely eliminated, and in which the bedframe proper may be raised and lowered by means of a rack and pinion. Another objectof the invention is to providearemovable foot-frame and foldable legs for the same to permit the bed structure as a. whole to be folded into as compacta unit; as possible when not in use. Further objects will hereinafter appear.

The invention consists ofthe parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the bed.

Fig. 4 is a detail view of the foot-frame, showing the construction of the folding legs.

Referring to the drawings in detail, A indicates the head-frame of the bed, 2 the mattress frame, and 3 the foot-frame. The several frames shown are preferably constructed of light tubing and are secured together by standard fittings, such as here shown, and for the purpose of permitting the bed to be folded and to assume an upright position when desired a pair of extension side frames, such as shown at 4, have been provided. The mattress frame 2 is pivotally mounted, as at 5, between the side frames 4, and while any suitable form of pivotal connection may be employed a U- shaped lug 6 adapted to receive a pintle is employed.

For the purpose of permitting the mattress frame to be easily raised or lowered with comparatively little effort even by a child, a pair of segmental rack members 7 have been employed. These racks are se-' cured one on each side of the mattress frame and they are so positioned as to intermesh Specification of Letters Patent.

with apair of pinions 8 secured upon a shaft 9 journaled transversely of the main head frame A in bearings 10 formed on one of the tube fittings 11. The outer ends of the shaft are square to receive a hand crank 12. and as this may be removed and applied when'desired, it can readily be seen that the mattress frame may be easily raised or lowered by any one with comparatively little effort; Any danger of the bed accidentally closing itself is in this instance entirely obviated as counterweights, springs, or like devices are not employed. 7

The bars 14, connecting the upper and lower rails 15 and 16, respectively, of the head-frame, are curved at their lower-ends,

as shown at 17. The curve conforms with i the sweep of the head end offlthe mattress frame land'the racks 7 and serves as a guideand'. support for the mattress, pillows and bedding when the bed is being raised, there.- by preventing these from being displaced and also obviating the necessity of employing mattress clamps, straps, or the like at this end of the bed. The foot end of the frame may, however, be provided with ordinary bedding and mattress clamps of any type desired.

For the purpose of permitting the bed as a whole to consume as small a space as possible, when folded and not inuse, it is desirable that the legs shown at 18 should be foldable. This is accomplished by pivotally connecting the same, as at 19, to the lower edge of the foot-frame 3. A tube 20, slidably mounted on the upper end of each leg, is adapted to be lifted up, as shown in Fig. 1, to cover the pivotal connection and also to lock the legs against movement when tlie bed is lowered. This tube, when moved into the position shown in Fig. 4, permits the legs 18 to automatically fold as the bed is raised, and while any suitable means may be provided for securing the sleeve 20 in the locking position shown in Fig. l, I prefer a friction sleeve which will automatically retain its place when raised.

The U-shaped lugs 6 employed permit the mattress frame as a whole to be quickly removed from the main frame A if it is desired to take the bed apart for shipping or storage and screws, such as shown at 21, are provided which also permit thefoot-frame to be removed. The several units forming thebed may, therefore, be separately packed or stored and as the manner of assembling same is very simple it is obvious that it may be accomplished by any one.

Ihe materials and finish of the bed as a whole may otherwise be such as the experience and judgment of the manufacturer may dictate. V I

I wish it understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims and that I do not wish to limit myself to the specific design" and construction here shown.

Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a folding bed of the character described, a head member consisting of main and supplemental vertical posts, top and bottom rails, and a plurality of vertically disposed bars connecting said rails, the lower ends of the vertical bars having a concave curvature, and a mattress frame pivoted and turnable about the center of curvature of the said vertical bars, and said bars forming a receptacle and guide for the head end of the bedding during the movement of the mattress frame.

2. In a folding bed, a vertical head frame having a forwardly curved guide at its lower end betwden the sides thereof, and a bed frame pivotally related to the head frame,

the pivotal point of the bed frame being at the center of curvature of the forwardly curved guide whereby. the bedding during the movement of the bed-frame engages said guide so as to be controlled thereby.

8. In a folding. bed, a vertical head frame having a forwardly curved lower portion, a

bed frame pivotally related to the head frame, the pivotal point of the bed frame being at the center of curvature of the. lower portion of the head frame whereby. said curved portion affords a guide for the bedding during movement of the bed-frame,
