Be it known that I, JONATHAN J. ROBINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Bloomsburg, in the county of Columbia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in bedsteads, the improvements being applicable to a full-size bed, childrens beds, cribs, and dolls beds.

One object of my invention is the provision of a bed which can be folded to occupy a very small space, to enable ready storing or shipping of the bed, and which can be quickly set up and form a complete and perfect bed.

Another object of my invention is the provision of improvements which can be applied to all characters of beds and which improvement will be simple, durable, and inexpensive.

Another object of my invention is the provision of a bedstead which can be folded to occupy a very small space and which can be instantly set up for use and which will be of ornamental and attractive appearance and thoroughly practical in every particular.

Tith these objects in view my invention consists of a bedstead embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.

Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved crib or bedstead with one of the sides dropped down. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view showing the bed or crib folded. Fig. 3 represents a vertical central sectional view of the complete bed or crib set up for use. Fig. 4 represents a detail sectional view with one of the ends folded and secured in closed position. Fig. 5 represents a detail View with the end in vertical position, particularly to show the relation of the end links or plates which connect the head and foot of the bed with the side rails. Fig. 6 represents a side elevation of the bed complete. Figs. 7 and 8 represent detail views particularly illustrating the manner of connecting the sides with the bottom of the bed.

Referring by letter to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views thereof,

the letter A designates the bottom of the bed, to end strips B of which is secured the wovenwire mattress O, and upon the upper side of said end piece of strips is secured the cushions Or buffers D, and upon the lower sides of the side strips or rails E of said bottom is secured the cushions F, the purpose .of said cushions on the upper and lower side of the bottom being to protect the parts of the bed when folded. On the inner side of the said side rails and near each end thereof is pivoted the inner end of the link G, the outer end being pivoted at H to the head and foot of the bed, and when the parts are folded they are secured in folded position by means of the hooks J, mounted upon the pivot H at the inner end of the links and engaging lugs K on the head and foot of the bed, as most clearly shown in Figs. Q and 4.

To the end pieces of the bottom of the bed, on the outer face of the four corners thereof, are secured the plates L, provided with the upward and outwardly extending arms M, each provided with an opening or eye N, which forms a bearing for the studs O, secured to the four corners of the hinged sides P. These hinged sides have their upper rails Q'formed with tenons R, which when the parts are assembled for use t in mortises or sockets S in the four posts ofthe head and foot sections, this construction securing the hinged sides firmly when in position for use, but permitting said sections to be easily dropped down outwardly or folded' inwardly over the wire springs for storage or shipment.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it will be seen that the head and foot sections are connected by the links to the bottom of the bed and that the sides are hinged to said bottom and engage the four posts of the head and foot sections when the parts are set up and that the bed can be collapsed or folded and theparts secured in the best possible position to enable an easy shipment, the cushions on the ends and sides of the bottom of the bed resting against the hinged. sides and the head and foot sections when the parts are closed and preventing injury thereto.

One of the advantages of my folding device IOO as to the head and `foot sections is that by placing' the pivot H low enoug'h toward the bottom edge or' the side rail ,l can get the head or foot sections to 'i'old around the sharp corner of the side rail.

My bed becomes very rigid by the application of weight on top of the bed-frame, because the links or plates moving' in a circle from pivot H become more tight as the weig'ht is increased, but will swing' clear upon the removal of the pressure thereon. rl`he mechanical principle involved is the taking' advantage of the arc ot' the circle in which the link must move to g'ive a tight contact when set up and a tree release when the bed is to be taken down.

Another point otl merit, as applied to a crib, (a bed having side guards to keep the occupant from falling' out,) consists in the method by which these side guards can be made to fold in or out or down.

It will also be noted that my improvements provide an ornamental and attractive bed which, while comparatively light in weight, possesses great strength and durability and generally that the improvements render the bed desirable and practical.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is4

l. The bedstead herein described consisting of the bottom having the plates secured to each corner having the attaching portion and the outwardly-extending' portion, the side sections having' their lower ends pivoted in said outwardly-eXtending ends of the plates and having' the tenons on their upper ends, the end sections, the links connecting the end sections with the bottom, the pivoted catches having' one end connected to the pivot which connects the links with the bottom of the bed and having' their hooked ends engaging' studs on the end sections, said end sections being formed on their inner Vfaces with sockets to receive the tenons on the ends ot' the side sections.

2. The bedstead herein described, consisting of the bottom having the cushions on the upper and lower sides thereof, the plates secured to each corner oi' said bottom and having the straight attaching' portion and the up ward and outwardly curved portion, the side sections having' their lower ends pivoted in said curved ends of the plates and having' the tenons on their upper ends, the end sections, the links connecting' the end sections with the bottom, the pivoted catches having' one end connected to the pivot which connects the links with the bottom or' the bed and having' their hooked ends engaging studs on the end sections, said end sections being formed on their inner faces with sockets to receive the tenons on the ends of the side sections.
