Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May it, 191?.
Application filed April 24, 1916. Serial No. 93,185.
, T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1. PETER Pnnnnsnn, a of the King of Denmark, residing at Nowell. in the county of Buena Vista and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Beds, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to camp beds, of the type in which the flexible bedbottom is so connected with lazytongs members that folding of the bed will be attended by the formation of a plurality of depending loops by the flexible bottom, which loops may be utilized to neatly hold the bed clothes, so that the bed may be completely folded with the bed clothes in it, and when the bed is opened the bed clothes will be in proper position for use, and it consists in advantageous construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the bed open or extended.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section taken through the folded bed.
Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged fragmentary views illustrative of the connections between the bottom and the lazytongs members.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings. y
The supporting sides of the bed are formed by two series of lazytongs members 1 the said members being pivotally-connected by rivets 2 or other devices suitable to the purpose.
Fixed to the members 1 at the foot end of the bed is a. panel 3, while hinged to the members 1 at the head end is a panel 4. This panel 4 is adapted when the bed is open, to rest against the upper ends of the members 1 referred to and serves as a pillow support. The said panel 4 is also adapted when the bed is closed or folded, Fig. 2, to rest on the upper ends of all the members 1 and constitute aconvenient seat or a support for books, ornaments, etc. Extending between and connected at its ends to the panels 3 and 4 is the flexible bed bottom This bottom 5 is preferably of heavy canvas calculatedto take the place of the spring and mattress usually employed on bedsteads. The longitudinal edge portions of the bottom 5 are formed into loops or barrels 6, and in said barrels are arranged 1ongitudinally-disposed and spaced bars 7. which are preferably of wood and circular in cross-section. This arrangement. constitutes a strong and durable connection of the bars 7 to the bottom 5, and the bars 7. in turn. are connected with the upper portions of the lazytongs members 1 through the medium of eyes 8 which are fixed to the bars 7 and the bottom 5, and eyes 9 which are connectcd to the lazytongs members and are interlocked with the eyes 8 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. In the present embodiment of my invention. the eyes 8 complementary to the bars 7 are comprised in wire sections which are each bent into the form of a figure 8 as shown in Fig. 4; a portion of each wire section being carried through the canvas and secured in a circumferential groove 10 of one bar 7-as illustrated. Also. the eyes 9 are carried by shanks 11, which constitute rivets for the upper portions of the lazytongs members 1.
\Vhen my novel' bed is folded and the lazytongs members are brought ti'igether in compact relation as shown in Fig. 2, the bars 7 are caused to assume upright positions with the result that the bottom 5 forms a plurality of depending loops, Fig. 2.. adapted to neatly hold the bed clothes so that when the bed is opened to the position shown in Fig. 1 the bed clothes will rest in position for use.
It will be gathered from the foregoing that my novel bed is inexpensive in construction and easily operated. and that it embodies no delicate parts such as are likely to get out of order after a short period of use.
By reference to the lower portion of Fig. 2, it will be noticed that transverse braces 12 are interposed between the lower parts of the inner lazytongs memb rs of the two side series so as to lend adequate stiffness and strength to the bed. The said transverse braces respectively comprise a cross bar 13 fixed between opposite lazytong members 1. and diagonal struts 14 each fixed at one end to the inner side of a lazytong member 1 and at its opposite end to the upper side of the cross bar 18 at an intermediate point in the length thereof.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
In a camp bed, the combination of lazytong side supports, a flexible bottom disosed between said side supports and having its longitudinal edges formed into barrels wise series 1n said barrels or loops of the bottom and separated by intervening spaces and havin circumferential rooves at their middles, wn'e sections, of 8- orm, extending through the walls of the barrels or loops and having eyes disposed in said grooves of the longitudinal bars and also having eyes exterior of the barrels or loops, and eyes interlocked with said exterior eyes and having shanks which constitute rivets for the upper portions of the lazyton side supports.
' In testimony whereofI ave hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PETER PEDERSEN.
