ANDREW BLRANAM.PNOTOLITHQ.WASNNETON DE y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN D. BATTIN, OF NEVARK, NEV JERSEY.v
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 557,101, dated March 31, 1896.
Application filed December 20, 1895. Serial No. 572,792. (No model.)
T0 all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN D. BATTIN, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to compartment-boxes, the special object and construction of which will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the box with its upper cover or lid opened; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the side cover opened in addition to the upper lid; Fig. 3, a vertical sectional view through the center of the box, and Fig. 4 a perspective view showing details of construction.
The primary object for which my invention is designed is a pocket match-box provided with a compartment for the reception of matches and a separate compartment or space designed to inclose a frame or holder for a portrait or the like.
Referring to the annexed drawings,A designates the case as a whole, which is provided with the usual hinged cover B. A spring C is secured within the main compartment D of the box, its upper end bearing against a lug or projection a carried by the cover B, and causin g said cover to remain either in an open or closed position. A shoulder b and an upright projection or rim c are formed upon one side of the box at its upper end, while on the opposite side there is a laterally-extending ledge or shoulder d, said ledge being in a plane slightly lower than that occupied by the shoulder b.
E indicates a cover hinged to the lower end of the body and adapted to be swung up and entirely cover one side of the same. This cover is provided at its bottom and on its sides with a laterally-extending flange which comes into contact with the side face of the body and forms a continuation of the edge of said body when the cover is closed. A second closed compartment F is -thus formed.
The upper end of the cover E is made with a shoulder e and an upright projection or rim 5o f, which when said cover is closed form a conadapted to take into a depression h in the ledge CZ when the cover E is closed. The slight yielding of the parts forms a springcatch for the retention of the cover in its closed position.
Secured to the face of the box and within the compartment F is a rim G. This rim is designed to receive a picture or similar article, said picture being held in place by a flanged cover comprising a spring-collar H and a transparent pane secured in said collar. When the cover B is closed down, its lower edge takes over the rims c and f, securely holding the cover E from being opened or swung out. Vhen the parts are in the position indicated in Fig. l, the cover E may be opened, but enough pressure must be exerted to overcome the spring-latch provided for the same. Under ordinary circumstances the cover E will remain closed and the contents of compartment F remain unexposed.
To all outward appearances the box contains but one compartment, the main compartment D, and only by theclosest inspection will the presence of the second compartment be discovered. This is true even when the upper lid or cover is open.
In practice the face of the box contiguous to the picture-holding device will be suitably ornamented, the design or configuration of the outer face of the box being generally reproduced. This forms an ornamental frame for the picture, the effect produced being highly ornamental and pleasing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim -is 1. In a box, the combination of the body and its inclosed compartment, a cover hinged to the upper end thereof; a second cover hinged to the lower end of the body and adapted to close against the side of the same a frame or holding device secured to the body and adapted to be covered by the second cover when closed against the body; and a catch for said second cover.
2. In a box, the combination with the body and its inclosed compartment, of the cover adapted to close the upper end thereof; a second flanged cover hinged to and adapted to swing up against the body; a picture-retaining device secured to the body within the compartment formed by the flanged cover, and
IOO
means for securing said langed cover in its closed position.
3. In a box, the combination with the body and its inclosed compartment; of the cover adapted to close the upper end thereof; a second flanged cover hinged to and adapted to swing up against the body; a picture-retaining device secured to the body within the compartment formed by said flanged cover; and a latch for said anged cover.
4. In a box, the combination with the body and its inclosed compartment; of the cover adapted to close the upper end thereof; a rim or ledge extending laterally from one side of the upper end of the box; a second flanged cover hinged to and adapted to swing up against the body of the box, the upper end of the said cover coming into contact with the laterally-extending rim, whereby a second compartment is formed.
5. In a box, the combination with the body and its nclosed compartment; of the cover adapted to close the upper end thereof; a rim or ledge extending laterally from one side of the upper end of the box, a second flanged cover hinged to and adapted to swing up against the body of the box; and a latch for holding said cover closed against the body and the rim.
6. In a box, the combination of the body and its closed compartment, said body provided with a shoulder b and rim c on one side of its upper end; a laterally-projecting ledge on the opposite side; a flanged cover pivoted to the lower end of the box, and provided at its upper end with a shoulder e and rim f, adapted when said cover is closed to form a continuation of the shoulder and rim on the body; and a second cover to t over the top of the body and embrace the rims c and j.
'7. In a box, the combination of the body and its closed compartment, said body provided with a shoulder b and rim c on one side of its upper end; a laterally-projecting ledge on the opposite side; a flanged cover pivoted to the lower end of the box, and provided at its upper end with a shoulder e and rim f, adapted when said cover is closed to form a continuation of the shoulder and rim on the body; a latch for holding the ianged cover closed; and a second cover to fit over the top of the body and embrace the rims c and f.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
