House-DOOR LETTER-Box.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,264, dated Novemberl?, 1891. Application filed April 2, 1891. Serial No. 387,326- (No model.)

Be it known that I, ABRAHAM S. ADLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bal` timore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Letter-Boxes, of which the following is a full and clear description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my box with its en trance door closed and locked. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same on the line a: of Fig. l, showingthe movement of the several parts in dotted lines.
My present invention relates to boxes or receptacles adapted to receive and hold individual maiLmatter, and to be secured to the doors of residences, office-rooms, the.; and my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now describe its construction and indicate the manner in which the same is carried out.
In the said drawings, A represents a-verti cally-sliding front, through the upper portion of which is a slot or opening through which the mail-matter is passed in the usual manner into the receptacle B. Hinged to the lower portion of this opening is a plate a,
which, when the door is drawn down Within up, so as to open the slot the plate C will be drawn up so as to close the receptacle B at its bottom, and when the front is again drawn down, so as to close the slot, the bottom of the receptacle will be thrown open, so as to allow any mail-matter deposited to pass into the receptacle B', or into any receptacle that may be provided for its reception. I have preferably provided the receptacle B for this purpose, which can be cast all in one piece with the receptacle B, and be provided with the hinged bottoms D, having hasps d, for the securing and locking of the same.
If desired, inspection openings may be formed in the sides of the receptacle B, through which the postman or others can see if there be any inail-matter within the receptacle.
In rear of receptacle B, I provide a chamber E for holding newspapers and other large packages intended for the mail, and that a single box may be made to serve the purpose of two offices, I secure a division-plate F in the center of the receptacle B', hinged at the bottom and extending to the top, with a coiled spring or any other well-known means to draw the top of the division-plate to one side when not needed and throw all the mail in to the one receptacle, but when the otherdivision of the receptacle is to be used, a rod or pinf, connected with the plate and extending through a slot in the outer casing, is pressed in and the division-plate F moved back, and the mail-matter is caused to pass into the other chamber of the receptacle, thus enabling one box to accommodate two or more parties.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. Aletter-boX having a sliding front provided with a slot, and a hinged plate to open and close the same by sliding the front, in combination with a hinged bottom connected with the door and adapted to open when the door is closed and close when the door is open, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A letterbox provided with a sliding front, having an opening or slot, a hinged door controlling the same, whereby the slot is opened or closed by sliding the door, in combination with asecondary receptacle provided with a hinged bottom for the discharge of the mail-matter, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
