MATCH-SAFE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,121, dated November 10, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, OTTO H. HUEBEL and FREDERICK W. MANGER, of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Match-Safes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates particularly to match-safes and other articles which are to be stood upon ornamental surfaces. It is also applicable, however, 'to other articles.

\Ve will describe a match-safe embodying our invention, and then point out the novel features in claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a match-safe embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. is a bottom View. Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates a base-plate, here shown as made in the form of a tray, in which burnt matches or ashes may be placed. The base-plate A has an opening a through it, within which a block A is secured. This is formed of a single piece of metal and is preferably hollow, as shown, and has a reduced upper portion a, to fit within the lower portion of a match-box and force matches upward.

The block A, near its bottom edges, is provided with a shoulder a on its exterior. Its edge portion is inserted in the opening a, and the shoulder rests upon the edge of this opening. Lugs a, formed integral with the block A, are adapted to be turned outward'into recesses a formed in the bottom of the baseplate, for the purpose of securing the block thereto. The walls of the recess are beveled downward and outward,so that the lugs therefor may be bent in the form of hooks to engage therewith. By this construction it will A and designed to engage the sides of a matchv box. Each side piece has inwardly-turned flanges b at its edges to engage around the edges of a match-box. There is a space between the reduced portion of the block and side pieces.

The side pieces B are secured to the enlarged or base portion of the block A by means of screws 12, passing through holes in the lower portion of the sides and engaging. in tapped holes in the enlarged base portions of the block.

To render it practicable to use a matchsafe or other article upon any polished surface Without causing injury to the latter, we provide a support of material F which will not be liable to injure any support upon which the article is placed. This consists, preferably, of leather inserted so that the edges will be presented below the surface of the metal. In the present instance we have shown this as inserted in a groove formed in a block A. After its insertion, the inner wall or flange a of the groove will be pressed outwardly, so as to pinch the leather or other material. It may be advantageous to use a wire F in the groove Within the leather or other material, as this will form a ridge en ablin g the material to be held securely in the groove, as shown in Fig. 5.

In Figs. 6 and 7 we have shown that a piece of leather or analogous material F of the form illustrated in Fig. 9 may be fitted to the inside of the lower portion of the block A, and secured there by a block D, fitted inside of it and secured by screws cl to the block A.

In Fig. 8 we have shown a piece of leather or analogous material cemented into the inside of the lower portion of the block A.

\Ve do not wish to be restricted to the use of leather or any other specific material, but design to cover, broadly, any non-scratching material.

Having described our invention, what we claim isa 1. In a match-safe, or similar article, the combination of a base-plate provided with an opening or recess in its lower surface, a block adapted to fit within and be secured in said opening and carrying at its outer lower portion a piece or pieces of a non-scratching material, and means for securing the block within the opening so that the edges of the nonscratching material will extend below the base-plate, substantially as specified.

2. As anew article of manufacture,a matchsafe,or similararticle,having a groove formed in its base in which is inserted non-scratching material with its lower edge projecting below the lower surface of the base, said material being secured in place by forcing one side of the groove toward the opposite side to pinch the material, substantially as specified.

In a match-safe, the combination of a base-plate having an opening through it, a hollow block having its bottom edges resting on the upper surface of the baseplate and having integral lugs turned into inclined recesses in the walls of the opening through the basc-plate,side pieces secured to the block and having inwardly-turned flanges, and a non-scratching material secured to the block and having its edge projected beyond the bot tom plane of the base-plate substantially as specified.

In a match-safe or similar article the combination of a base-plate having an opening or recess therein, a block fitting within the recess or opening and secured to the baseplate, a piece or pieces of non-scratching material projecting below the block and baseplate, and means for securing said nonscratching material in position substantially as set forth.
