Description
J. H. ASTRUGK.
SMOKER'S UTENSIL.
APPLICATION EILED JULY 6, 1912.
INVENTOR flflmm WITNESSES.-
BY 2 Afro/MM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. ASTRUCK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SMOKERS UTENSIL.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN H. Asrnuox, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Smokers Utensil, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a smokers utensil of novel construction which is well adapted to conveniently present a match box and cigar rests to the smoker, and which furthermore checks the unauthorized removal of the match box from its holder.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sect-ion of a smokers utensil embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a perspective view thereof with the tray omitted; and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section of Fig. 2.
My improved smokers utensil comprises essentially a U-shaped plate having a fiat bottom 10 and a pair of parallel sides or wings 11. Bottom 10 has a large central opening and from its ends extend upwardly a pair of lugs 12 arranged at right angles to the wings and formed out of the body of the bottom. Lugs 12 are considerably lower than wings 11 and serve as rests for a match box 13, the outer telescoping shell 14 of which is supported upon bottom 10. Thus by setting the box bet-ween the wings upon the lugs, and then drawing shell 14 downward until it strikes bottom 10, the box will become firmly seated in a partly opened condition, so that the matches are freely accessible. From wings 11, there depend a pair of integral prongs 15 which are passed through corresponding apertures of a supporting tray or base 16 and are then upset to permanently connect the device thereto. At the top, each wing 11 is ex tended laterally to form a trough shaped cigar rest 17, which is thus placed in convenient proximity to the match box.
One of the wings 11 is apertured at a level Specification of Letters Patent.

below the upper edge of lugs 12 for the accommodation of a laterally extending suitable catch 18, which is shown to be made in the form of a nail and which is projected with its pointed end through the match box shell 14 below the bottom of box 13 into the compartment or hollow formed between lugs 12. By the construction described, the catch is movable independent of the casing that accommodates the match box and may thus be thrust through the casing-aperture into the lower empty portion of the match box shell, after the match box has become properly seated. The catch serves to so hold the match box to the casing that it is not liable to be readily pilfered or to become unseated when struck by a match, while at the same time, the catch is not liable to set off the matches while being inserted. Of course, the box can be readily removed when emptied, by withdrawing the catch and thus liberating the shell.
It will be seen that by the construction described, the entire utensil including match box holder, match box shell holder and cigar rests is formed of a single integral piece of material, so that the construction is greatly simplified.
I claim:
In a smokers utensil, a U-shaped member comprising a horizontal web and a pair of parallel upright sides, at least one of said sides having its upper end bent outwardly and dished to provide an article support or rest, a pair of parallel match box supporting lugs located intermediate the sides and spaced therefrom to form match box-casing receiving gaps, said lugs being integral with the web and extending upward at right angles thereto, a base, and means for securing the web to said base.
JOHN H. ASTRUCK.
