Leon W. White, Pittsfield, Mass. Application March 28, 1945, Serial No. 585,341
1 y'(llaim. l
This invention relates to smokers appliances and has for an object to provide an ash tray which will eliminate re hazard caused by cigarettes when the tray is used.
Another object of the invention is to provide an ash tray having an inclined edge wall upon which a cigarette cannot be balanced.
A further object of this invention is to provide an ash tray having a series of snuiiing compertinents.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an ash tray so formed that, neither` a cigarette nor its ash can fall from the tray under any condition.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved ash tray,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof, and
Figure 3 is a diagrammatic section of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings as above enumerated and in the following specification, like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout and in which IIJ, illustrates my improved ash tray which consists of a cylindrical container II, divided by a series of walls or partitions I2, into cigarette snuing compartments I3. Each of said walls I2, incline upwardly to an annular flange I 4, which flange is uted throughout its length, and the ridges I5 and I6, dividing said flutings inclining to said walls I2, as indicated at Il, in Figure 2 of the drawings.
The walls I2 include outer vertical edges Eo that engage the inner periphery of the cylindrical container or cylindrical wall II.
The member II, is provided with an inner cylindrical member or wall I8, at which the inner vertical edges Ei of the walls I2, terminate. The upper inner ends I9, of the walls I2, terminate at the upper surface 20, of the member I8. An annular flange 2I, is provided on said surface 20, against which the burning end 22, of a cigarette 23, may rest, said flange forming a stop to limit the down movement of the cigarette. Projecting from the center of said member 20, is a U- `shaped member 24, the arms 25 and 2B, of which are turned away from one another and formed arcuately as indicated at 26 and 21, to provide holders into which cigarettes may be laid.
The distance d between the inner vertical edges of adjacent partitions is considerably less than the diameter of a cigarette to permit the mashing of a cigarette as the same is moved between an adjacent pair of partitions I2 and toward the inner cylindrical wall I8.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided an ash tray for supporting .lighted cigarettes but so arranged that no such cigarette can be laid thereon in any manner whereby if left on the tray it can possibly burn out and fall over the edge of the tray but if left lighted the cigarette must fall from the support 20, at said lighted end into one of the snuing compartments I3, the bottom portion 2B, of which is practically excluded from air and the cigarette will soon die out as far as its lighted end is concerned. A smoker still using the cigarette may seat it against the edge I4, of the tray with its lighted end 22, upon said support 2l, but if he has finished the smoking thereof, he can seat it upright into one of the compartments I3, as indicated at 29, of Figure 3.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Minor changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details and parts such as come within the purview of the invention claimed may be resorted to, in actual practice, if desired.
Having now described my invention that which I claim as new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
An ash tray comprising inner and outer concentric cylindrical walls, and a plurality of circumferentially spaced radially disposed partitions joining the inner and outer walls, said partitions being of a length substantially equal to the diameter of said inner wall, each of said partitions including an outer vertical edge and an inner vertical edge, and the distance between the inner vertical edges of adjacent partitions being considerably less than the diameter' of a cigarette to permit the mashing of a cigarette as the same is moved between an adjacent pair oi partitions and toward the inner wall.
