face in which the incline throughout the rim is inwardly-toward receptacle 2-, the shape of the surface not being trulyconical because of the curvature between the outer and inner edges of the rim, as illustrated in Fig. 1. Rim 4 is substantially narrow compared with the diameter across the outer periphery thereof, that is, it is somewhat less than the length of the usual cigarette as illustrated in Fig. 1.

A suitable container In for ashes and other refuse is provided with a detachable top member H of annular form having a central opening, not fully shown. The outer periphery of rim II is adapted to engage an ofiset seat portion 6 at the lower end of flange for supporting contaiuer [0 in suspended position, as shown in Fig. 1, within receptacle 2. The upper edge of the container or top ll thereof is arranged in substantially the same horizontal plane with the inner edge of rim 4, as illustrated in Fig. 1, so the inner end of a cigarette or the like, supported on the receiver in the manner disclosed in Fig. 1, will project into the opening in the container. The inclination and curvature of rim 4, as disclosed in Fig. 1, is designed with the particular purpose of preventing a cigarette from being supported on rim 4 in any position except a substantially transversely extending position as illustrated in Fig. 1-

In other positions, a cigarette or the like of general cylindrical form will roll inwardly toward container [0 and will either roll into and through the opening in top II or onto the flat top surface of top H immediately adjacent to rim 4. This tends to prevent a lighted cigar, cigarette or the like from being placed on rim 4 in such a manner that it is likely to roll off, he jarred off, or due to the constant burning of a cigarette, have the end overbalance and drop off the outer edge. In the present construction the tendency of a cigarette or the like when it is mounted in transversely extending relation on rim 4 as shown in Fig. l is to gravitate inwardly toward container ID. The inclination is such that a cigarette or the like may be placed in the position as indicated in Fig. l in the drawing where it will remain. so long as the receptacle and rim is not jarred or moved. The jarrring or movement of the receptacle and rim 4 will immediately, due to the inclination between the outer and inner edges of rim 4, cause the cigarette to slide inwardly into container It This effectively guards against lighted cigarettes or the like falling on the floor off of rim 4.

In cases where condensation wets the paper covering of the cigarette positioned as shown in Fig. l, the cigarette will then have a tendency to stick to rim 4 and cover I I. It has been found that the cigarette will burn out before a suflicient length of the cigarette burns to allow the end, as shown in Fig. 1, to drop off of the outer edge of rim 4.

Any suitable type of container may be used for suspension in seat 6 of rim 4, the type shown including a covered type of ash container, although it will be understood that an open type of container may be used in place thereof. Receptacle 2 may also be utilized as the ash receiver, if desired, by either omitting the use of the container or by utilizing a top member similar to that shown at ll engaged in seat 6 without having the remainder of the container structure so that refuse and ashes will be directly contained within receptacle 2. This last described variation of the invention is not desirable because where the receptacle is carried as part of a floor stand structure, it is more difficult to keep the refuse cleaned out of the receptacle.

For that reason it is preferred to use a removable container for receiving the ashes and other refuse that can be detachably engaged in and suspended in receptacle 2 from seat 6.

The invention claimed is:

1. An ash receiver comprising a receptacle open at the upper end, a narrow rim having an imperforate supporting section normally positioned in substantially horizontal relation but having the surface slightly inclined to position the outer edge slightly above the inner edge, a depending annular flange on the inner edge of said section slidably engaged in the upper end of said receptacle with the under face of said section adjacent said flange seated on the upper edge of said receptacle, said flange having the lower end portion offset inwardly in spaced annular relation to the inner wall of said receptacle, said offset forming a seat below the upper edge in said receptacle, means securing said receptacle to said flange, an ash container formed to slidably fit in said annular flange and engage said seat with the upper edge substantially aligned with the upper surface of said section and the bottom portion suspended in said receptacle from said seat in spaced relation to the walls of said receptacle, and an annular flange depending from the outer edge of said section extending below the bottom face of said section and cooperating to form an annular handle for said ash receiver while said section will normally support a cigarette, or the like in transversely extending relation at any part of its surface when at rest thereon but will cause a cigarette in motion relative thereto and in other than a substantially transverse position to roll or slide inwardly toward said container.

2. An ash receiver comprising a recleptacle open at the upper end and having an annular laterally and outwardly extending flange on said upper end, a narrow rim having the lower inner marginal face seated on the upper face of said flange, 2. depending annular flange on the inner edge of said rim extending into the upper end of said receptacle in engagement with the inner face of the side wall thereof, means securing said flange to said receptacle, said depending flange having the lower end portion offset inwardly in annular relation to provide a seat below the upper edge of said receptacle with said end portion spaced inwardly from the walls of said receptacle, an outer annular depending flange on the outer edge of said rim extending below the bottom face of said rim and forming a carrying handle for said ash receiver, said rim having the entire area thereof between said inner and outer depending flanges forming an annular supporting section having a uniform surface configuration extending in substantially
