UNiTnD States PATENT Garrett.
HENRY PATTBERG, OF JERSEY GITY, NEW JERSEY.
TOILET-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,973, dated May 16, 1882.
Application filed March 27, 1882.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRY PATIBERG, of Jersey City, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Toilet-Case, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of a toilet-case capable of being placed upon a table or of being suspended on the wall, and of the construction of springblocks which shall hold the toilet articles steady and prevent the same from sliding or falling out while the case is moved or opened and shut.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a side view of the toilet-case when closed. Fig. II shows a vertical section of the same open, ready for use. Fig. III is a front view of the same when closed. Fig. IV is a front view of the same when open, as shown in Fig. II. Fig. V is a side view of the spring-blocl:.
Similar letters represent similar parts inall the figures.
A is the case, with a cover, B, at the front, hinged at its lower end to the body of the case, and secured by a suitablestaple, a, at its upper end. made wider at the lower part than at its upper part, and said case is provided with a baseplate, 11, forming a foot for the same to stand upon it it is desired to rest the same upon a table, said base -plate b projecting some distance outside the front of the case, so that its edge shall form a brace for the cover B whenever the same is open and turned down, as shown in Figs. II and IV. At the upper end of the case a projection or lug, U, is arranged, provided with an internal hollow space, d, having at the back an opening, 0, for the purpose of passing over the head of a nail attached to a wall, and covering up said nail and its head when the case-is suspended from the wall. In the bottom of the case A a suitable block, it, having a central cavity, is attached, into which the end of the looking-glass handle fits; and two blocks, mm, are arranged at the sides, near the upper part, between which the looking-glass frame fits, and provided with The case, including the cover, is-
turn buttons 11 v, turning over the lookingglass frame to hold the same in place. (See Fig. IV.)
The comb and brush are fitted into thecasecover 13 and held fast in their proper position by spring-blocks I) D. These spring-blocks D I) (see Fig. V) consist of two blocks having suitable recesses or cavities, w a, to embrace the articles. At their joint 2 they are fastened together by a. piece of linen or other flexible material to form ahinge. On each sideof the blocks recesses r are made, in which a spiral spring, 8, is arranged, one end of which is attached to one block and the other end to the other block. Only one of the blocks is securely fastened to the cover B in its proper and desired place, while the other block is free to move or turn on its hinge, and being held together by the action of the spiral springs .9. By the arrangement of these blocks the articles placed into the cover B will be held firm, and prevented from falling or moving while the cover is opened or closed or while the case is moved about, at the same time being easily taken out whenever required. 7
It will be readily understood that the inside of the case A and cover B can be lined in any desired fancy style, covering up the blocks a a, m, and D D, and to receive the articles.
By this arrangement of making a toilet-case to stand upon its end or to be suspended from a nail in the wall the looking-glass canin most cases be used without the necessity of removing the same out of the ease, and the comb and brush will be handy for use.
By suitable ornamentation of the outside of the casin g, and more particularly of the cover, a very handsome article of furniture can be produced, independent of its usefulness and other advantages.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A toilet-case, A, wider at the bottom than at the upper end, and provided with a hinged front or cover, B, hinged at the bottom, and secured at top by a suitable staple, a, in com bination with a baseplate, b, projectingsome distance from the front of the case, substanwith suitable recesses, 00 00, joined together by 10 tia-lly in the manner and for the purpose dea flexible material forming a hinge, in combiscribed. nation with spiral springs .98, substantially in 2. A toilet case, A, in combination with a the manner and for the purpose herein speci- 5 projecting part or lug, G, at its upper part, fied.
having a cavity, d, with opening 6 at the back, HENRY PATTBERG. for the purpose substantially as set forth. Witnesses:
3. In combination with a toilet-case, A, the HENRY E. ROEDER, spring-blocks consisting of two blocks, D D, S. A. EMANUEL.
