To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANZ A. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
In the use of bags, pocket books, and the like, much difficulty has been encountered in overcoming the objection raised by those who use such articles, to the spreading of the bag frame members when the contents of such bag or pocket book are such as to so distend the sides as to make the closing of the bag or pocket book diilicult. The principal objection arises from the fact that as ordinarily constructed, but a single catch or lock is provided in the center of the bag frame members for holding the same together, leaving the ends of the frame to be sprung apart by overcrowding the interior of the bag, with resulting annoyance and loss. In order to eliminate these evils and overcome these objections, I have devised a new fastener which holds the bag frame members together and which is further provided with an auxiliary catch or locking member hingedly secured to the said fastener for additionally holding the members together and independently operated from the fastener.
In carrying out my invention, I make use of the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents an enlarged side ele ration of my improved fastener.

The bag frame to which my improved fastener may be applied, consists of two hinged members 1 and 2, of substantially the shape shown in Fig. :1. Near the middle portion of the frame member 1, I secure the catch or looking member 3 as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 5 of the drawings, or in any other convenient or desired manner. The catch or looking member 3 preferably consists of an open-ended casing provided with two dowi'nvardly extending sides 1- and designed to embrace and hold the frame members 1 and 2 together.
Extending rearwardly from. the sides 1 and 5 of the catch 0 locking member 3, are extensions (3, by means of which the said fastener is hingedly secured to an integral bearing 7 formed on one end of a plate 8 by means of the pin 9. This pin 9 is designed to pass through the bearing '7 which is integrally formed on one end of the plate 8 by curling the metal thereof, and designed to be embraced by the extensions 6 of the locking member 3. The plate 8 is secured to the frame member 1 by means of an integral tongue 10 (shown in dotted lines) in serted through an aperture in the frame member 1 and clenched over in any suitable or convenient manner, said tongue, together with a suitable rivet 11 serving to secure the plate 8 with the catch or locking member 3 to the frame member 1.
The plate 8 is further provided with a rectangular projection .12, provided with a suitable recess 13 for the reception of a hook or projection 14, to be hereinafter described, so that when the bag frame members are closed, said hook or projection will be received into the recess 13 and firmly secure the frame members in locked position.
15 represents a chambered metal cap secured to the frame member 2 by means of integral tongues 16 inserted through apertures in the bag frame member 2, and clenched over in any suitable or convenient manner.
The chambered cap 15, as illustrated, is provided on one side with a rectangular notch 18 for the reception of the hook or projection 14, and in its top side with an elongated slot 19 for the reception of the push member 20, from one side of which extends the integral hook or projection lt.
21 represent studs conveniently secured to the under side of the push member 20 inserted through suitable apertures in the bag frame member 2 and 22 represent spiral springs surrounding said studs and interposed between the under side of the push member 20 and the upper side of the bag frame member 2, designed to maintain the push member 20 with its attached nose or projection 14: in the position clearly indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The catch or looking member 3 serves to additionally hold the frame members together. Both of the downwardly extending sides of the locking member 3 are adapted to snap over pressed-out portions 23, which are preferably merely projections from the metallic bag frame members, as clearly shown in. Fig. -i of the drawings. This prevents an accidental removal of the catch. or locking member 3.
Experience has den'ionstrated that the organization above described, is a practical and efficient one for accomplishing the ends sought by this invention. T he construction may, however, be varied in detail by those skilled. in such matters without departing from the invention.
I claim:
1. The combination with a pair of hinged frame members, of a spring-actuated fastener on one of said. frame members comprising a chambered casing notched in its front wall and slotted in its upper Wall, a push member located in said casing, springs located within the casing and adapted to bear upon the push member to maintain it in a locked position, holding means provided with an integral bearing formed on one end thereof on the other of said frame members designed to have locking engagement With the push member and a locking member hingedly connected to the said integral bearing on one end of the holding means, adapted to embrace said casing and holding means and movable in the plane of said frame members into locking engagement With the outer sides of said frame members and operated independently from said push member.
The combination with a pair of hinged frame members, provided with locking projections on the outer sides of said frame members, of a fastener on one of said frame members comprising a. chambered casing notched in its front wall and slotted in its upper wall, a spring-actuated push member located in said casing and projecting through the notched and slotted portion of said casing, holding means on the other of said frame members provided with a rectangular projection provided with a suitable recess for the reception of the push member, and a locking device comprising an open-ended casing provided with downwarfilly-extending sides, designed to engage with said locking projections on the outer sides of the frame members, said locking device being hingedly connected to one end of the other means, adapted to 'inclose said push member and holding means and movable in the plane of said frame members into locking engage-- ment with the said locking projections on the outer sides of said frame members and operated independently from said push member.
