To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs A. NnonAvAL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in boxes, with the object in View of providing a box having a spring cover in which the spring acts to hold the cover in either its open or closed position.
A further object is to provide the means for accomplishing the desired result, which will be simple in construction, economical in the manufacture, and one that can be readily applied to boxes now in common use.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a plan view of my device, the cover of which is partly broken away to show the parts below, Fig. 2 represents a transverse section taken in the plane of the line A-A of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, Fig. 3 represents a xertical central section taken in the plane of the line BB of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, Fig. 4 represents a vertical section taken in the plane of the line CC of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, Fig. 5 represents a vertical central section corresponding to Fig. 3, with the parts shown in the position which they assume when the cover is open, Fig. 6 represents a front elevation of the spring detached from the box, Fig. 7 represents a side elevation of the same, Fig. 8 represents a plan view of the same, Fig. 9 represents a front elevation of the spring engaging member detached from the box, and Fig. 10 represents a side elevation of the same.
The body of the box is denoted by 1, and the cover for the same, by 2. The body and cover are linked by means of a hinge comprising two members 3, 4. The member 3 is secured to the cover 2 by means of a metal strap 5, the ends of which are passed through slots 7 in the cover 2 and member 3 and are turned back upon the member in opposite directions, thus serving to hold the cover and hinge member firmly together. In like manner the body 1 and member 1 are held firmly together by means of the strap 8, as shown in Figs. 3, 4: and 5.
Afiat spring 9 is held in position to the body by means of cars 10, 11, formed integral therewith and offset therefrom so as to space the free end of the spring 9 a slight distance from the body of the box. The cars 10, 11, are riveted to the member 1 of the hinge, which member is secured to the box as hereinbefore described.
The member 3 of the hinge has riveted thereto a spring-engaging member 12 which is provided with shoulders 13, 14, which, in the present instance, are shown as abutments which are turned back from the body of the spring-engaging member 12. These shoulders are located upon opposite sides of a tongue 15.
The spring engaging member 12 extends downwardly from the hinge member 3, so that the shoulders will come into contact with the spring 9, and force it forwardly as the cover is opened or closed. The shoulders 13, 14, are so located that the spring will tend to press them rearwardly at all times. hen the cover is closed, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 1, the shoulders are below the hinge pintle, and the spring 9 pressing thereon serves to keep the cover closed. l/Vhen the cover is open, as shown in Fig. 5, the shoulders are above the hinge pintle and the spring 9 serves to force them rearwardly, tending to hold the cover open.
To limit the rearward movement of the cover, the tongue 15 extends beyond the shoulders into engagement with a slot 16, cut in the free end of the spring 9, which tongue will come into contact with the top of the slot, as shown in Fig. 5.
l Vhile I have shown the spring 9 and its engaging member 12 secured to the hinge members by rivets, I wish it understood that both thespring 9 and member 12 may be attached to the box and cover, independent of the hinge or hinge members, by any well known and approved means.
It is evident that various changes might be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein set forth, but
What I claim is 1. A box comprising a body, a cover hinged thereto, a spring having one end rigidly secured to the body, and means cartried by the cover and projecting into the body for engaging the otherend of the spring to hold the cover in its open or closed position and for limiting the opening movement of the cover.
2. A box comprising a body, a cover hinged thereto, a spring having one end rigidly secured to the body, and an independent means fixedon the cover and projecting into the body for engaging the other end of the spring to hold the cover in its open or closed position and for limiting the opening movement of the cover.
3. A box comprising a body, a cover hinged thereto, a spring engaging member carried by the cover, shoulders on said member, a spring secured to the body engaged by said shoulders for holding the cover in its open or closed position, and means fixed on the cover and projecting into the box engaging the spring for limiting the opening movement of the cover.
4;. A box comprising a body, a cover hinged thereto, a spring engaging member carried by the cover, said member being provided with 'a tongue and shoulders, and a spring secured to the body having a slot in the free end adapted to be engaged by the said tongue for limiting the opening movement of the cover, the said shoulders being arrangedin position to engage the spring for holding the cover in its open or closed position.
5. A box comprising a body, a cover hinged thereto, a spring engaging member carried by the cover, said member being provided with a tongue, shoulders and abutments formed from the body of the said member and located upon opposite sides of said tongue, and a spring secured to the body having a slot in the free end adapted to be engaged by the said tongue for limiting the opening movement of the cover, the said shoulders being arranged in position to engage the spring for holding the cover in its open or closed position.
6. A box comprising a body, a cover, a hinge having one member secured to the body and the other member to the cover, a spring engaging member secured to one hinge member, a spring secured to the other hinge member, engaged by said spring engaging member for holding the cover in its open or closed position, and means on said spring and spring engaging member adapted to coaet for limiting the opening movement of the cover.
