BOX-LIDI-IOLDER OR HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 10, 1917.
Application filed November 17, 1916. Serial No. 131,931.
'1 b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM TAPPE, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Union, in the county of Doddridge and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Box-Lid Holders or Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bdx lid holders or hangers adapted for general application, but particularly intended for use on jewelry boxes, and the primary object of the invention is to providea device of this class which may be readily applied to the interior of a box body and a hinged lid therefor without requiring the formation of recesses or cutting away any part of the box members and thereby permitting the use of the improved device upon a box and lid or cover constructed from very thin material. ther object of the invention is to provide a holder or hanger for a box and hinged lid wherein the parts are comparatively simple in structure and may be assembled in operative relation and having a positive opera tion without liability of jamming and which will also act as a reinforce relatively to the hinges connecting a lid or cover to a box body by holding the said lid or cover steady or against lateral movement, thereby reducing the wearing strain on the hinges and their fastenings.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing;
Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section through a box body showing the lid or cover thereof open and in elevation and illustrating the improved holders or hangers applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a section of the box and lid or cover in a plane at a right angle to the sec tion shown by Fig. l with the lid or cover closed.
Fig. 3 is a section of a box and lid or cover in the same plane as that shown by Fig. 2 with the lid or cover open.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the holders or hangers and showing the fulcrum clip which is attached to the box body by separate detail.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of the slide clip forming part of the holder or hanger.
A fur- Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical section of a portion of a box showing a modification in the application and construction of a part of the holder or hanger.
Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of a lllnodified form of fulcrum clip shown by The numeral 5 designates a box body to which a lid or cover 6 is connected by hinges 7. This box body and its lid or cover may be of any suitable dimensions and adapted for difierent uses.
The improved holder or hanger comprises a flat slide bar 8 having deflected or bent ends 9 with openings therein to receive fastenings, thereby causing the main body of the slide bar to stand outwardly from the said ends. On the slide bar 8 a slide clip 10 also constructed of sheet or flat metal is mounted to move and the members thereof are held in proper spaced relation by a space member 11 secured therein, the ends 12 of the slide clip being formed as eyes to serve as a fulcrum means for one end of a stay brace 13 which may be of any length and contour and held connected to the said eyes by a fulcrum pin or rivet 14c. The holder or hanger also includes a fulcrum clip 15 consisting of a longitudinal bar or plate 16 with fastening openings 17 in opposite ends and a hook or fulcrum member 18 bent upwardly at an 7 angle from one edge parallel to the bar or plate 16 and terminating at its free end in an eye 19 to form a fulcrum connection for the end of the stay brace 13 opposite that held between the ears 12, the end of the stay brace being inserted between the eye 19 and the bar or plate 16 and connected to the said eye by a fulcrum pin, as at 20, see Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The opposite ends of the stay brace 13 are formed as eyes 21 and are readily attachable respectively to the ears 12 and the eye 19.
In applying the improved stay brace the slide bar 8 is placed against the one inner side of the lid or cover 6 and secured in parallel relation to said side; and inapplying the slide bar 8 the slide 10 and stay braces are simultaneously positioned and the stay brace ready for final attachment to the eye 19 of the fulcrum clip 15 which is secured against the inner side of the body 5 of the box. The holders or hangers are preferably applied to opposite sides of the box body and lid or cover, as shown by Fig.
1, and against the inner surface of the latter parts of the box, thereby dispensing with the necessity of recessing, cutting or otherwise mutilating the box body or the lid or cover and adapting the improved holder or hanger to be used with box bodies and lids or covers constructed of very thin material.
The operation of the holders or stay braces will be readily understood. As the lid or cover 6 is closed the slides 10freely move longitudinally on theslide bars 8, and said slides and slide bars being formed of flat metal lateral movement or vibration of the slides 10 and the stay braces is prevented. The, space members 11 are so positioned within the slides 10 as to leave ample space between the opposite side members of the slides to permit the latter to freely move over the slide bars 8 without binding, but at the same time the slides 10 are not so loose as to allow lateral play relatively to the slide .bars. In opening the lid or cover the slides 10' shift on the flat slide bars 8 to ward the hingedend of the lid or cover, as shown by Fig. 3, the stay braces'13 then standing across the rear of the box body at an angle. lVhen the lid or cover 6 is closed thestay braces 13 fold closely adjacent to the sides of the box body and lid or cover, asshown by Fig. 2, and do not in the least interfere withthe contents of the box.
5 :Al]. the parts of the improved holder or hanger are made from sheet metal and may be readily assembled and applied to the box body and lid or. cover as above explained. It. will'be understood that the proportions of-the several parts of the holder or hanger -may be varied at will and also that sheet cured against the box lid 6 as shown by Fig.6, and the stay brace 13 is attached at 7 Copies of this patent may be obtained for its ends to the slide clip 10 and fulcrum clip This form of the holder or hanger is particularly adapted for use with a box and lid of light construction or made of thin material and will be found very effective in operation.
\Vhat is claimed as new is:
r In a box lid holder or hanger, the combination with a body member and a lid or cover member hinged thereto and movable downwardly upon and upwardly from the said body member, flat slide bars secured to-the inner portions of the opposing sides ofone of said members in parallel relation to said sides and standing inwardly from the latter for a greater portion of their length, fulcrum clips secured to the inner opposing sides of the other member and provided with car means bent at an angle and having transversely alined openings at intermediate points with relation to the said clips, stay braces at opposite sides of the members having one end of each pivotally connected to the ear means of the clips, and slide clips shaped to conform to and freely movable on the fiat slide bars andhaving the opposite ends of the stay braces pivoted thereto, the slide clips being provided with outwardly projecting terminal cars between which the ends of the stay braces are movably held and also having a space member between the ears and the adjacent edges of the slide bars and between the side portions of the said slide clips to prevent too loose movement of the slide clips on the slide bars, the projecting ears of the slide clips disposing the ends of the stay braces attached thereto in positions for clearance of the several parts of the holders or hangers and to insure an easy pivotal action, the space members of the slide clips also acting to resist strain on and bending of the ears of the said clips.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
, WILLIAM TAPPE.
