To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, EDWARD KLATT and RnINiioLo KALrIns'r, (who have declared their intention of becoming citizens ofthe United States) residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspender- Locks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in suspender locks and resides in the provision of a lock which will enable ready adjustment of suspenders and the like and afford eilicient locking means for locking the suspender straps after adjustment.

An important object of the invention is to provide a device such as described which will efiiciently permit the adjustment and locking of thesuspenders without injury thereto.

A further object is to provide a device such as described which may be readily attached to the suspenders, consists of few parts, cheap to manufacture and which possesses the capacity for long and repeated service.

The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more (particularly pointed out in the claim which is appended hereto and forms a part of this application.

With reference to the drawings, wherein we have illustrated the preferred embodil1nent of our invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which, similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating our device as it would appear in assembled operative position. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1 illustrating the device in locked position and attached to the suspenders Fig. 3 is a side elevation illustrating 0 lthe device removed from the suspenders and a locking plate in open position, and Fig. 4: is a side elevation illustrating the locking plate in closed position.

Referring to the drawings 1 designates \one of the straps of the ordinary suspender or the like that is double at its lower terminal and connected with the usual securing straps not shown.

The adjusting locking device consists of a rectangular plate 9- formed of any suitable metallic material that forms the body portion for the device. This rectangular plate 2 or body portion is provided adjacent its lower longitudinal edge with a longitudinal slot 3. The free terminal of the strap 1 of the suspenders is inserted through this longitudinal slot 3 as at 4: and suitably stitched as at 5 thus securing the strap 1 to the device. A pair of gripping tongues 6 and 7 are formed with the body plate 2 in spaced relation to each other by longitudinally slitting the plate. These gripping tongues 6 and 7 are bent inwardly and are c isposed at an angle of 45 degrees to the plate 2 so as to provide for the gripping engagement with the suspender strap 1. An approximately U-shaped locking bar 8 is pivotally mounted within one of a pair of rolled ears 9 and 10 at one terminal and at its other terminal within a flanged portion 11. These ears 9 and 10 are formed integral with the plate 2 at one end thereof in spaced relation to each other and are rolled at their upper terminals for a purpose which will be hereinafter described. The locking bar 8 is offset as at 12 at its pivoted terminals so as to provide for the positioning of the bar 8 between the angularly disposed gripping tongues 6 and 7. The portion 1 of the suspenders extends between the locking bar 8 and the locking tongues 6 and 7 so that when the locking bar 8 is moved so as to interpose the tongues 6 and 7 the suspender portion 1 is forced into gripping engagement with the tongues.

A locking plate 13 having a rolled ear 14: formed adjacent its inner terminal and an integrally formed spring catch 15 at its outer terminal is pivotally mounted upon the plate 2. The rolled ear i l on the locking plate is positioned between the rolled ears 9 and 10 and a hinge pin 16 is inserted through each of the rolled ears 9, 10 and 14; thus providing a hinged joint for the plate 2 and locking plate 13.

The rolled ear 1% extends approximately at right angles to the plate 13 thus providing for the disposal of the plate 13 in close relation to the plate 2 when in a closed position. The flanged portion 11 is formed integrally with the plate 2 and extends at right angles thereto. A locking head 17 is formed integrally with the outer terminal of the flanged'portion 11 and is provided by rolling the outer terminal of the flange back upon itself upon the outer side thereof. This bead 17 is disposed adjacent one end of the flange so as not to interfere with the pivoted terminal of the locking bar 8 that is mounted within the flange.

It is apparent with reference to the foregoing description and drawings that when the locking bar 8 is not held in looking position by the locking plate 13 that the suspenders are permitted adjustment. To look the suspenders in adjusted position, the looking bar 8 is moved so as to force the portion 1 of the suspenders into engagement with the az-ngularly disposed gripping tongues 6 and The locking bar 8, holds the suspender portion 1 in engagement with the tongues 6 and 7 and is disposed between the tongues,

and to hold the locking barin such position, the locking plate 18 is moved into engagement therewith and the spring catch 15 1 locked in engagement with" the bead 17.

Thus it Will be seen that the suspender por tion 1 is locked and that movement thereof relative to the device is prevented.

Thedevice may be stamped out of a suitable blank of metal. Thus it will be seen that a reliable, eflicient and cheap adjusting lock is provided. y

In reduction to practice, we have found that the form of our invention, illustrated in the drawings. and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efiicient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent With the adoption of our device will necessarily vary,
