To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND T. HILL, citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screen -Door Catches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein t0 the ace companying drawings.
This invention relates to a screen door catch, and has for its object the construction of a simple and efficient catch for holding a screen door temporarily locked or permanently locked at the control of the operator. With this and other objects in view, my invention consists of certain combinations and modifications and advantages, as will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out, and set forth in the appended claims.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved catch showing the same as it appears attached to a door frame and door screen, while Fig. 2 is a similar view, except that the screen is in an open position.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, l designates a door frame and 2 the screen door frame.
A casing 3 is provided, which casing is open on its under side (Fig. 3), and the casing is provided with apertures 4 in its outer portion for receiving the retaining screws 5 that are provided for attaching the casing andY its contained parts to the door frame, as shown.
The casing is open also at its front end 6 (Fig. 3), and is provided with a rear closed end 7.
Primary spring jaws 8 are positioned in the casing 3 and these jaws 8 are provided at their base with right-angled extensions 8a, which extensions 8 lie flat against the end 7 (Fig. 3), and through these extensions or base portions 8a of the primary jaws 8 eX- tend rivets 9, each rivet being provided with heads upon its ends, the rivets not only perform the function of securely fastening the jaws 8 in the easing, but their inner heads being fiat, as shown in Fig. 3. provide a substantial bearing for the curved springs Specification of Letters Patent.

The inner heads of rivets 9 constitute a saving in the construction of the device, for by placing the springs 10 upon these heads a shorter length spring may be used; each spring exerts its greater amount of pressure at its outer ends, 10, upon the sides of the casing 3 and the sides of the primary jaws S.
It is to be noted that the primary jawsS are outwardly-bulged at their center to constitute a receiving pocket 8b, and each jaw 8 is outwardly-dared at its outer end for permitting the ready entrance of the bulged tongue 11 carried by the screen door frame 2.
The tongue 11 is provided with right angularly positioned bases 111L that engage the screen frame 2, and through these bases 11a extend screws 12 securely fastening the tongue 11 to the screen frame 2.
When the screen door is closed the tongue 11 moves in between the jaws 8, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3, and then, by providing alined elongated apertures 13 in the outer portion of the casing 3, a substantial U-shaped member 14 can be quickly inserted in these elongated apertures 13, straddling the jaws 8 as shown in Fig. 3, and thereby securely fastening the tongue ll'in the casing 3 so that the screen door` cannot be opened until the operator removes the locking device 14. The locking device 14 is preferably attached by chain 15 to one of the securing screws 5 (Figs. 1 and 2).
The jaws 8 will ordinarily retain the screen door in the closed position, against accidental opening thereof, such as the door blowing open by the wind, but if it is desired to securely fasten the screen door closed, then all that is necessary is to insert the U-shaped` locking device 14 in the apertures 13, after the tongue 11 has entered between the jaws 8.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination, of a casing provided with a pair of spring jaws, said casing provided with a pair of alined elongated apertures contiguous to said jaws, a tongue adapted to enter between' said jaws, and a locking device inserted in said elongated apertures and straddling said jaws and tongue for fastening said tongue within the casing against accidental displacement.
2. In a device of the class described, thel combination with a casing, of spring jaws provided with outwardly-bulged portions and with outwardlyfextending outer ends,
said casing provided with elongated, alined apertures at the point of the jaws between their outwardly-bulged portions and their outwardly-extending ends, a tongue provided with a bulged portion adapted to enter between the jaws and be seated between the bulged portions thereof, and a U-shaped fastening member inserted in said elongated apertures and straddling the jaws between their outer ends and their hulged portions, and also straddling the tongue `for securely fastening the tongue within the casing.
3. In a ldevice of the Class described, the combination with a casing provided with a closed end, of spring jaws provided with 4right angularly positioned base portions resting against the closed end of said Casing, said jaws provided with outwardly-bulged portions, rivets provided with heads upon their ends, extending through the Closed end of said casing and through the base portions of said jaws, Curved springs bearing only at their center upon the inner heads of said rivets and pressing at their ends upon the sides of the casing and the outer sides of the bulged portions of the jaws, and a seoiilrii'ig tongue normallj,r positioned between said jaws.
