Description

C. W. POSTER. Stocking-Supporter.
Pate nted July 30 I878.

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
CHARLES "V. FOSTER, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOCKING-SUPPORTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,552, dated July 230, IP78; application tiled January 3, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. FosTER, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Stocking-Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, perspective view, Fig. 2, central section, both figures enlarged Fig. 3, transverse section through the hinge or pivot.
This invention relates to an improvement in clasps for stoeking-supporters 5 and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter described, and more particularly recited in the claim.
a is one jaw, and b the second jaw, the two hinged together, as at c. The two parts have a flange at each side, one to shut within. the other, as in Fi 3, and the pivot passes through the space between the two parts, and the parts extended to the rear of the pivot.
0 is a slide terminating at one end in loop, (I, as a means for securing it to the strap, lts other end passes in between the rear end of the two parts of the clasp, turned around the pivot, then backward, as seen in Fig. 2.
The jaw 11 is bent to form ashoulder, f, forward of the pivot. 'lhe bent portion of the slide 6 forms a cam between the two parts, which, when drawn back, as shown in Fig. 2,
presses the parts in rear of the pivot awa from each other, forcing the jaws together and upon the stocking, which is placed between them.
To open the jaws, force the slide 0 forward, as indicated in broken lines, Fig. 2, in. which movement the forward end of the bent or cam portion will strike the shoulder f in the jaw b, and force the jaw 11 away from the jaw (I, turning the rear end down, as shownin broken lines, Fig. 2.
\Vhen the stocking is introduced between the jaws in their open condition, the slide is drawn outward, forcing up the rear end of the jaws and down the forward end.
I do not broadly claim a pair of jaws or clamps with an attachment loop as a part thereof, as such I am aware is not new.
I am also aware of Patent No. 191,152, and claimnothing shown or described therein but Vhat I do claim is- The combination of the jaw a, the jaw I), constructed with ashoulder, f, and hinged to the jaw a, and both jaws extending to the rear of the pivot with a slide, 0, surrounding the point, and having its inner end constructed to form a cam to operate between the said two parts a b, to open and close them, substantially as described.
