IMPROVEMENT IN OVERALLS.

Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 179, 17 l, dated June 27, 1876; application lled April 12, 1876.

To all whom it may concern: y

Be it known that I, GEORGE R. EAGER, of Newtomiu the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overalls and other pantaloon garments; and I do hereby de Clare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a pair ot' overalls, to which my improvement has been applied; and Fig. 2 a cross-section ot' the same, taken through the waistband. Fig. 3 represents an enlarged and detached view of the clasp, as applied to the cord.

My invention relates to a new and improved mode ot adjusting the waistband ot' garments, so as to enable it to be iitted to persons having different-sized waists, and is equally applicable to overshirts and blouses as to overalls, drawers, pants, and other garments having waistbands which require adjustment.

My improvement consists ot' the application to a garment, provided with a hollow waistband, and a cord or strap arranged therein for the adjustment ofthe garment of a-springclasp, so constructed as to allow the cord or straps to be freely drawn through in one direction in the adjustment ot the garment; but which cannot be drawn back in the other direction without first raising the clasp from the cord.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improvement, I will now describe it in detail.

In Fig. l, A represents the body of av pair of overalls, to which the improvement is applied; and B the waistband.

The construction of the latter is better shown in Fig. 2, the back or rear halt' being represented as hollow, and into which is inserted a cord, al, the inner end b ot' which is stitched, sewed, or otherwise secured to the waistband. The other end of cord a is passed out of the hollow waistband through an opening, c, at the other end ofthe hollow of the waistband, and thence through a spring-clasp, U,-here inat'ter described.

The drawing shows the hollow of the waistband as being conned to the rear half of the garment; but it may be longer or shorter, as desired, so long as sufficient length is given to enable the garment to be adjusted' to the waists of ditt'erentsized persons.

The clasp C consists ot' a stationary clamp` plate, D, carrying a blank buckle, E, which is rigidly secured thereto, and on the upper end of which is pivoted a spring clamp-plate, F. The free ends ot' cla1np} )lates D and F, where a cord, a, is used as the means of adjustment,

. are rounded, and provided with teeth or prongs e, so arranged as to embrace the cord and prevent its retraction until the free plate F has been raised, or where a strap is used their ends may be straight instead of rounded. To the upper side ot' plate Fis rigidly secured one end ot' a spring, m, the other end of which passes through between thel outer face of the upper end of plate F, and the under side of the upper arm n of the blank buckle E, there being aslot cut in plate F for the purpose. The free end ot' spring m bears against arm a, and forces the free end of clasp-plate F down upon the cord, and hence causes the latter through its prongs to prevent any backdrag through the clasp. The upper end ot' clasp F is biturcated and bent around, so as to embrace arm u, and is thereby pivoted to the latter. Plate D, which forms the frame to which all the other parts. are attached, is secured to the waistband of the garment close to the opening c, through which the cord or strap is passed by means of a rivet, g, (shown in Figs. 2 and 3,) and both of which will illustrate the action or operation ofthe clasp.

By slightly shortening spring-plate Fit may be used as a clamp, and the teeth dispensed with entirely, but their use is preferred.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is

A pair et' overalls or other garment, provided with a hollow waistband, and a cord or strap, a, and with a spring-clasp, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as shown and described, and for thc purpose set forth.
