(No ModeL) H. N. ELLIOTT & E. L. BEMIS.
- SUSPENDERS.
Patented May 19,1891.
INVENTOR.
ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
HENRY N. ELLIOTT AND EDlVIN L. BEMIS, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,667, dated May 19, 1891. Application filed July 29, 1890. Serial No. 360,276. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: I
Be it known that we, HENRY N. ELLIOTT and EDWIN L. BEMIs, of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have" invented .new and Improved Suspenders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide new and improved suspenders adapted to be conveniently and readily attached to and detached from clothing, and which are simple and durable in construction and cheap to manufacture.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to behad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the improve ment. Fig. 4 is an enlarged face view of a hook connected with a ring. Fig. dis a side elevation as applied, the clothing being shown in section. Fig. 0 is a transverse section of the same, and Fig. 7 is a broken perspective View illustrating a modification.
The improved suspenders A are provided with a pair of shoulder-straps B B, each of which is provided in front with a lengthening and shortening piece B connected by a buckle B with the respective strap. The straps are preferably made of an elastic webbing; but other material may be used. The straps B and B are connected with each other at the rear by a cross-piece B to prevent displacement of the straps on the shoulders of the wearer. The rear ends of the straps l3 and B, as well as the lower ends of the lengthening and shortening pieces B are rigidly connected with a band C, which extends from one lengthening-piece to the rear ends of the straps B and B and then to the other lengthening-piece, so that the suspenders are open in front, as is plainly shown in Fig. 3. -On the lower ends of the lengthening-pieces B as Well as on the rear ends of the straps B and B, are secured rings D, or similar metallic devices, having an eye or loop adapted to engage hooks E, each formed on a metallic plate E, adapted to be secured by a rivet F to the waistband G of the pants. The lower end of each plate E is bent upward, so as to form a U-shaped plate H, between the ends of which the upper edge of the waistband G is passed, as is plainly shown in Fig. 5.
A strip I, of metal, is passed between the plate E and the back of the U-shaped plate H to form a tongue for the opening of the hook E to prevent displacement of the ring or loop D when the latter has engaged the said hook, as is plainly shown in Fig. 5. The lower end of the strip I is formed into a hook J, adapted to engage a button-hole or eye on the upper end of the drawers K, so as to support the latter from the suspenders.
The rivet F is preferably of the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and is made of two parts F and F each having a head, and of which the part F has a hollow split shank adapted to be engaged by the shank of the other part F In order to fasten the hookplate E to the waistband G, the rivet F is taken apart, the waistband is introduced in the U-shaped plate H, and then the rivet parts F and F are inserted through the corresponding openings in the plates E and H and the strip I and through an opening formed in the waistband G. hen the shank of the part F has passed into the hollow shank F, the first-named shank is securely held in place by the said split hollow shank, which firmly engages the shank of the part F Thus it will be understood that the hook-plate E can be readily attached to or detached from the waistband without sewing or other tiresome manipulation.
It is understood that the strip I passes through a slot in the lower bent part of the plate E, and isheld in place by the shank of the rivet part F. cured, as above described, to the waistband G of the pants, and then the shoulder-straps are arranged over the shoulders of the wearer in the usual manner and hooked by the rings D onto the several hooks E of the plates E. It will thus be seen that the suspenders can be readily applied or fastened on the hookplates to support the pants or detached from the same by simply disengaging the rings D from the hooks E. It will further be seen The hook-plates E are sethat the suspenders are firmly held in place over the shoulders by the connecting-strap B and are also prevented from slipping in the front or rear by the connecting-band O. Suspenders thus constructed are very durable and are cheap to manufacture.
In the form shown in Fig. 7 the rings D are omitted, and in lieu thereof the short tabs B" are secured, as by stitching, to the lower ends of the shortening pieces or ends B the said tabs being each formed with a button-hole 7b for engaging ordinarybnttons on a waistband.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In suspenders, the combination of the shoulder-straps B 13', provided at their front ends with the lengthening and shortening pieces B connected thereto by buckles B, the cross-piece B, connecting the shoulderstraps at the rear together, and the band C, rigidly secured to the rear ends of the shoulder-straps and to the lower ends of the lengthening or shortening pieces 13 the shoulderstraps and the pieces 13 being provided at their ends with eyes or equivalent devices be low the band C, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In suspenders, a hook-plate comprising a plate provided with a hook on its upper end and having its lower end slotted and bent into inverted-U shape, a strip projecting through the slot of the said plate and having a hook on its lower end, and a rivet for securing the several parts together and to a waistband, substantially as described.
3. In suspenders, a hook-plate comprising a hook formed on the upper end of the said plate, a U-shaped plate formed 011 the lower end of the said plate, between the arms of which is adapted to pass the waistband, a rivet made in two parts, adapted to pass through the said plates to fasten the waistband in place on the plate, and a strip forming at one end a tongue for the said hook and formed at its lower end into a hook to support the dra\ ers, substantially as shown and described.
