SUSPENDERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. `9, 1910.
Application led October 18, 1909.` -Serial No. 523,376.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEROME RICH, of Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention is a novel improvement in Suspenders, and has particular reference to the means for adjusting the length of the suspenders; and it resides in the novel adj usting devices of the Suspenders hereinafter described and summarized in the claim.
The Suspenders are, or may be, ofthe usual X-form and of any suitable material,`
as regards the shoulder straps; and the devices whereby the straps are attached to the trousers at back and front may also be of any suitable and well known kind.
In the drawings- Figure l represents an ordinary form of Suspender with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front View of one shoulder strap of the suspenders, showing the adjusting` devices. F ig. 3 is a detail section on line 3--3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a rear view of the adjustable slide detached. Fig. 5 is a front View of such slide. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view of the slide. Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view on line 7-7, Fig. 2.
In the drawings l and 2 represent the op posite shoulder strap members of the suspenders which intersect each other at the rear and are fastened together by stitching or other suitable means, and the rear eX- tremities of these members are provided with button-holes as usual. To the front portions of the members l and 2 are attached slotted straps 3, which may be of any suitable material. I preferably use leather straps for the purpose of lightness and strength. These straps 3 are applied to the exteriors of the members l and 2, and are arranged longitudinally thereof, and may be secured thereto by stitching, as indicated at 3a, or any other suitable manner. The straps 3 are provided at regular intervals with slots or apertures 3b, said slots being separated by bars or cross pieces 3C. These slots 3b are adapted to be engaged by the tongues 4b of slides 4, which are slidably fitted upon the front portions of the members l and 2. Each slide is provided at rear with a bar 4a to which the extremity of the adjacent mem ber (l or 2) is attached by sewing or otherwise as indicated in Figs. 6 and 7. An oval ring 5 may be hung in the loop of each member, below the slide 4L, as usual; and to said rings 5 the front button straps 6, by which the Suspenders may be fastened to the front of the trousers, are attached in any wellv known manner.
By adjusting slides 4@ up or down and engaging their tongues with upper or lower slots 3b in straps 3, the length of the suspenders can be varied, the same as is done by shifting the ordinary suspender buckles. This adjustment can be very easily effected, and does not require any annoying manipulation of buckles or small parts.
The length of the slotted straps 3 may be varied according to the total extent of adjustment it is desired to give the suspend ers; and the length of the slots 3b, and thickness of the intermediate bars 3, can be also varied according to the extent of step by step adjustment it is desired to give the suspenders.
The bars 3a may be reinforced, if desired, by means of metal clips or bands 3d which may be Wrapped therearound, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 7, and secured by rivets 3e. I do not consider it necessary to use these metal reinforcing bands in all instances, nor do I consider the invention restricted to the particular form of band shown in the drawings. The manner of adjusting the suspenders will be understood by any man andthe invention is not restricted to any kind of material. In some cases the straps 3 could be made long enough to serve both as the adjusting and also as the supporting members of the Suspenders.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon is:
Suspenders, comprising nonelastic shoulder members of fabric, a leather strap stitched to the outer side of each shoulder member and extending longitudinally thereof, and provided with equidistant slots; a slide surrounding each shoulder member and its strap and attached to the front enol of each Shoulder member, and having a downwardly pointed tongue on its loWer edge his and outer sole adapted to bevengaged with JEROME RICH. any one of the slots n the strap on such mark member to regulate the operative length Witnesses: thereof.

my own, I afx my signature in presence of two Wltnesses.
