No. 410,855. Patented Sept. 10, 1889.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAYER RUBIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,855, dated September 10, 1889. Application filed February 19,1889. Serial No. 300,423. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MAYER RUBIN, a subect of the Czar of Russia, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in suspenders, which are hereinafter described and claimed.
The drawings herewith illustrate the invention.
Figure 1 is a front view of the suspenders, one gripper and adjuster being omitted. Fig. 2 shows two views of the front hook. Figs. 3 and 4 are front and side views, respectively, of the gripper device. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are views of the parts comprising the gripper. Fig. 8 shows two views of the adjuster. Fig. 9 shows two views of the back hook.
The Suspender-web A consists in the presentinstance of two pieces crossed and fastened atthe back a. The front ends Z; are doubled back to form the usual loop g, and a front hook d is attached to said loop: The hook has a slot d and a spring-tongue c, which presses against the hook to confine the gripper O, which hangs therefrom The gripper 0 consists of two jaws efof special construction and pi'votedtogether. One jaw c has at the top a loop h, which engages with the front hook d on the suspender-web and is provided with a turn-button i and teeth 7c. The other jaw f also has teeth It, and the two jaws are to grip the Waistband of the pants, and when so gripping the turn-button 'L serves to keep the two jaws closed.
The construction of the gripper-jaws will be understood by reference to Figs. 3 to 7. The jaw e has two side slots j, one at each side, and also a tang Z adjoining each slot. The other jaw f has a lateral offset m, formed by two right-angled bends between its upper and lower ends, and said offset is provided with two slots a, between which is a pivot tongue 0. An opening 19 in front of and above the tongue connects with both slots n. To unite these two jaws so that they will have the pivot movement, the two tangs l on one jaw must be bent backward from the position in Fig. 5, so as to be at a right angle, and thus permit the two jaws to be united by inserting the top loop end h of thejawe from the lower side of the lateral offset m (in the direction indicated by the dart in Fig. 7) up through the opening 19. In doing this the bent tangs Z will pass through the offset slots 11. After the tangs Z of one jaw are above the offset m of the other jaw they must be bent back again to their former flat condition. Thereby a portion of each end of the said offset on the second jaw will occupy one of the side slots on the first jaw, and in this way the two jaws will be united and pivoted.
The turn-button 7: enables the grip-jaws to be released from the waistband of the pants at any time.
The web-adj uster E is used on the front of each strap, and is substantially like the similar device shown in Letters Patent of the United States granted me October 23, 1888, and numbered 391,7 21, except in the fastener or look part q q. (See Fig. 8.)
The back hook r is like the front hook d, except that instead of a slot it has tangs s for securing it to the web. The tangs pierce through the web and are then bent down, as shown.
The front and back hooks d r, the grippers O, and the adjusters D comprise the metal trimmings for suspenders.
Having described my invention, I claim- Suspenders having, in combination, the Webstraps A, grippers O, consisting of two jaws, one having two side slots j and a tang Z adjoining each slot and provided with a turnbutton, and the other having an offset m and two right angles and two slots 01 in the offset, and a tongue 0 between the said two offset slots, a portion of each end of the said offset on one jaw occupying one of said side slots on the other jaw, and a hook connecting the grippers to the web-straps, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MAYER RUBIN.
