BELT-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 422,062, dated February 25, 1890..

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN B. STIMPSON, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Belt-Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates to means for securing the ends of a belt together after the same has been passed about the person. The fastening is adjustable, so as to accoi'nmodate waists of different sizes.
In carrying out my improvement I form a fastening of two members, which members engage each other, and one of which is adj usted.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a face View of the belt-fastening embodying my improvement, showing portions of the belt to which the same is attached. Fig. 2 is a rear View of one of the fasteners. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the other member of the fastener. Fig. a is a longitudinal section of the member of the fastening shown in Fig. 2 and taken on the line 00 .70. Fig. 5 is a detail view in perspective of a certain clasp employed for screwing the member of the fastening shown in Fig. 3 to the belt.

Both members of the fastening are composed of wire. In making each I take a piece of wire and bend it so as to form a loop a.

The member A of the fastening, which is shown more clearly in Fig. 2, has bent or formed in the loop (:4 thereof, and. at such position that it will extend crosswise of the belt when in use, a cam c. The portions of the loop beyond the cam c extend through ears (Z, extending downwardly at the sides of a plate B. The plate B has a hollowed or 'depressed portion 6 intermediate of the ears (Z, and, as shown, has two horizontally extending portions 6, which extend from the centrally-depressed port-ion e. The strap D is passed between the cam-like portion 0 of the member A and the plate B, the said member having been raised so that the cam 0 will not bind upon the strap. If, now, the meniberA be swung downwardlyinto the position shown more clearly in Fig. 4, the cam portion 0 thereof will grip the strap D between it and the plat-e B, and thus prevent longitudinal movement of the strap. In order to adjust the strap to the desired length, it is but necessary to rock the member A upwardly or into the position shown more clearly in dotted outline in Fig. at of the drawings, when the strap D may be moved along freely.
The member A of the fastening is formed similarly to the member A, except that it has not the cam portion 0. Instead of such camlike portion, it is provided with a straight barlike portion f. One end of the bolt D is passed between said bar-like portion and the plate B, similarly to the plate B. A securing device F is then passed over the bar-like portion f, and prongs g, with which said securing device is provided upon its edges, are forced through the belt. In being thus forced through the belt they come in contact with the belt B, and are bent around, so that they securely fasten the strap D and the securing device'A'.
WhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination, with a belt, of a fastening therefor comprising two members, each made of a single piece of wire, one of said members being bent to form a cam, and a metallic piece'provided with ears, to which said cam is pivotally connected, and between which metallic piece and the cam a strap may be gripped, the other of said members being secured to said belt by means of a separate securing device extending over a portion of said member and provided with prongs for engaging the strap, substantially as specified.
