GARMENT-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 789,958, dated May 16, 1905.
Application filed April 25, 1904. Serial No. 204,919.
To (all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EPHRAIM K. BASTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Fasteners; andl do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fasteners for garments, such as the fasteners which are attached to braces or suspenders for engaging with the top portions of drawers, hose, stockings, &c.; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of the fastener. Fig. 2 is a side view of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the fastener, showingit opened. Fig. 4: is a rear view of the fastener. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the back plate, showing the notches i. .Fig. 6 is a side view of the fastener .provided with the link and notches. Fig. 7 is a detail view of the link J.
A is the back plate of the fastener provided with ahook B at its lower part. In the rear part of the hook there is a longitudinal slot Z), which has a series of teeth or projections 7) formed on its lower edge. Above the hook a spring-tang C is partially punched out of the metal of the back plate, or any other spring may be used, and this tang or spring projects upwardly and forwardly over the said hook B. About level with the top of the spring-tang two lugs D are provided at the sides of the back plate, and these lugs project forwardly. E indicates fastening bars or other approved fastening devices at the top of the back plate for engaging with a band 6. This band is ordinarily secured to the suspenders or to any approved portion of the garments.
F is a link provided with pivots f at its upper part, which are pivoted in holes in the lugs D, and f is a block or projection for the spring-tang C to bear against.
G is a locking-lever provided with side lugs g, which are pivoted on pivots g, which project laterally from the lower part of the link F. This locking-lever has a downwardly and rearwardly projecting spring-tang or spring 7b, which is partially punched out of it, and this tang or spring bears against the bottom part of the said link.
When the parts arein the positions shown in Fig. 3, a fold or other portion of a garment to be supported is placed in the hook, and the link and the locking-lever are then pressed to the positions shown in Fig. 2. The bottom edge of the locking-lever presses the material past the serrated edge of the slot B and into the bottom part of the hook, and the garment is securely fastened because the lower pivots g are nearer the back plate than the upper pivots f and the point of the hook, and the garment is held in a kind of toggle.
In place of the ordinary fastening-bars E I prefer to bend the top edge I of the back plate rearwardly and form notches '11 in its sides. J is a wire link which is clasped around the back plate in the said notches and which forms a bar at the front of the back plate, which affords a suitable fastening for the band.
What I claim is 1. In a garment-fastener, the combination, with a back plate provided with a hook at one end, a fastening device at the other end, and forwardly-projecting lugs at its side edges between the said hook and fastening device; of a link pivoted between the said lugs, a spring which normally presses one end portion of the said link away from the said back plate, and a fastening-lever pivoted to one end of the said link and arranged with its lower edge in operative relation to the said hook.
2. In a garment-fastener, the combination, with a back plate provided with a hook at one end and having a slot and a serrated edge in thercar part of the said hook, of a link pivoted to the upper part of the back plate, and a fastening-lever pivoted to the lower part of the said link and arranged with its lower edge in operative relation to the said hook.
3. In a garment-fastener, the combination, with a back plate provided with a hook at one end and a tang, of a link pivoted to the upper part of the said back plate and engaging with the said tang, and a fastening-lever pivoted to the lower part of the said link and provided With a tang which bears against the said link, the lower edge of the said lever being arranged in operative relation to the said hook.
