- CHARLES W. BURRIDGE, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF 7 TO DARIUS D. TIIROP, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
SKlRT-PLACKET' FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,381, dated March 23, 1897.
Application filed August 5, 1896.
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. BURRIDGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansing, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Skirt Fasteners, of which the fol lowing is a specification ,reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to a placket-fastener comprising a pair of flexible hinged jaws adapted to be secured to the opposite sides of the placket and provided with hooks and eyes for engaging with each other.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a garment to which my device is applied. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of my fastener with the jaws opened. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device with the jaws closed and bent into a curve. Fig. 4: is a cross-section through the device, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the upperhook and eye.
A is a garment provided with a placket 13, to the sides of which my device is secured. This comprises the flexible jaws O and O, preferably formed of thin spring-steel, hinged together at D at their lower ends. At their upper ends the jaws are provided, respectively, with the hook E and eye F, struck up i from sheet metal, the former comprising the securing-shank a, the curved bend b, and the outwardly-inclined tongue 0, having a rounded end cl. The eye F consists of the shank or securing portion 6, the inwardly-inclined portion fhaving the slot 9 formed therein,
I which is of greater width than the width of the tongue 0 and the end portion h. The hook and eye are preferably secured to the jaws by means of eyelet-rivets j, and the portion 7b of the eye is provided with apertures or $erial No. 601,755. (No model.)
eyelets it, these eyelets forming a means for sewing the j aw to the garment. Intermediate between the ends of the jaws are secured one or more pairs of hooks and eyes G and II, similar to the hook E and eye F, but preferably somewhat smaller. The device being thus constructed and secured to the sides of the placket, the jaws may be readily closed or opened to secure or unfasten the garment. When in use, it does not interfere with the comfort of the wearer or the appearance of the garment, as the extreme flexibility of the jaws permits the garment to assume any po sition which it would naturally take if the fastenerwere omitted. At the same time the jaws when engaged with each other will effectually prevent the gaping of the placket.
I desire to call special attention to the fact that the slots 9 in the eyes are of greater width than the tongues c, which permits of a movement of said tongues in the slots whenever the jaws are bent into a curve, as shown in Fig. 3. This play is necessary to the free bending of the jaws that they may be allowed to slide upon each other to compensate for the greater length of the outer curve.
What I claim as my invention is In a placket-fastener, the combination of the hinged flexible spring-jaws O O, the hook E secured to one jaw and projecting to one side thereof, comprising the shank a, the bend b and tongue 0; and the eye F secured to the other jaw and projecting to one side thereof comprising the shank e, the inclined portion f, having the slot g of greater width than the tongue 0 and the end portion h substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES IV. BURRIDGE.
