SHOE-LACE BUCKLE OR LOCK.

Be it known that 1, CHARLES \V. Frscnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sparks, in the county of Cherry and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Lace Buckles or Locks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its primary object the provision of a device independent of the shoe to which it may be applied, which is adapted to secure the bow of a shoe lace and at the same time form an ornamental appearance of a buckle.

A further object of the invention is to provide a fastener which in its use will prevent the usual entanglement of the ends of the lace resulting generally in a double knot being tied when it is desired to loosen the bow.

WVith the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a partial view of a laced shoe having my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the fastener; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken about on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a detail view of the base plate; Fig. 5 is aperspective view of the clamping member; and, Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the locking tongue.

Throughout the following detail description, on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like refer ence characters.

Referring to the drawings, the device comprises a base plate 1, slightly curved longitudinally to conform to the curvature of a shoe to which it may be applied, said plate having at its lower portion a slot 2 extending to and being somewhat enlarged at the central portion of the plate. Stamped from the body portion of the plate 1 are the spaced ears 3 in which is pivotally mounted a U-shaped clamping member 1, said pivot being located at a suitable place between the extremities of said clamping member, as indicated at 3'. is adapted to bear against the base plate 1 when it is desired to lock the fastener in its operative position on a shoe lace.

While I have illustrated a desirable ornamental form of base plate, I do not desire to be limited to said shape, any fanciful design for which may be used and still perform the functions desired.

The operation of the fastener may be readily understood by reference to the drawings. The fastener is adapted to be used in connection with either high or low shoes and is first secured tothe shoe lace by passing the slot 2 in the base plate 1 over the ends of said lace beneath the bow 7. The loop ends of the bow are then drawn up through the opening 8 in the clamping member 4 and said clamping member will then bear against the free ends of the shoe lace and the loops of the bow will rest against the upper side of the clamping member 4. The locking tongue 5 is then pressed downwardly against the bow knot, said downward movement bringing the cam 6 into engagement with the base plate 1 and raising the upper end of the clamping member 4, causing simultaneous clamping action of the clamping member and locking tongue on the.

bow of the shoe lace. lVhen it is desired to remove the fastener, it is only necessary to raise the locking tongue 5 which will release the cam from engagement with the base plate 1 and permit the fastener to be readily released from engagement with the bow of the lace. As will be understood, the locking tongue 5 when in operative position or engagement with the bow is adapted to be received in the opening of the clamping member, thus affording a more firm clamping action of the lace. As a further means of positively preventing the free ends of the lace from becoming entangled in the bow, said free ends may be passed through open ings 9 in the base plate at opposite sides thereof.
