GARMENT-SUPPORTE'R.
$PEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,278, dated March 27, 1894.
Application filed July 24,1893. $erial No. 481,337. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
kinton, in the county of Merrimac and State of New Hampshire, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to devices for supportlng garments, such as hose, skirts, or other apparel, the object of the invention being to provlde a simple and effective clasp which will not be liable to tear the object to which it is attached.
The invention will be fully set forth in the following specification and claims, and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, of which- F gured. is an elevation of my improved device shut together as when clasping an article, Fig. 2.being an end view of same. Fig. 3.'1s a plan of my improved clasp, showing a portion of an elastic or other strap by which it may be connected to a belt or waist-band, and a portion of an article closed within said clasp; and Fig. 4 is a side view of a clasp or fastener showing the jaws provided with a fac ng of yielding material.
slmilarreference letters denote correspond- 1ng parts.
The clamping lever A, having the projection B, with the part D, are pivoted respectively at I, and J, to the ears H, projecting at each side of the frame G, provided at one end with an elongated opening g, for inserting one end of an elastic or other strap X, as seen 1n Figs. 1 and 3.
The adjacent surfaces of the parts D-G. may be faced with rubber or other elastic material as shown respectively at E-F, so as to be more adhesive without danger of damaging the goods to be pressed between them, or the parts D-G may be corrugated crosswise and arranged to closely fit each other when closed;and the part D, is provided with a catch 0, at its outer end, to receive and secure the clamping lever A, in the position shown in Fig. 1.
The spring catch C, may be formed integral with the part D, or secured thereon by rivets K, as seen in the drawings.
As shown in the drawings, the pivotal point of the parts A and D are at dilferent distances from the part G so that their free ends swing in the arcs of difierent circles and the pivotal point I is preferably located forward of the point J so that the differences between the arcs are increased. With such a location and construction of the parts it is evident that when the parts A and D are swung toward the-part G, the end of the part A, which is preferably shorter than the part D, will move inward relatively to the end of the part D. By the time that the part D has been brought into contact with the part G the end of partA is moved inward relatively thereto so that it will pass behind the catch 0 and will lock the part D against the return movement until the ends are disengaged, as by bending the catch 0 out far enough to release the end of the part A.
To reduce my improved clasp or garment supporter to practice the parts D-G, are separated as in Fig. 4, and the article to be attached-such as T, in Fig. 3,is passed in between them;-then by pressing the outer end of the clamping piece A, the parts DG, or E-F, are brought together, and the spring catch 0, which was forced outward by the end of the lever A, has returned to its normal position and over or outside of the said lever A, thus firmly holding the article T-between the parts D-G. The object of the projection B, being to exert a pressure upon the part D,
and prevent its springing at that point.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a garment or hose support, a main frame or bracket having at one end an opening for fastening an elastic or other strap, and provided near said opening with ears, one at each side, projecting at right angles upward, a frame pivoted at one end to said ears and provided at its free end with a suitable spring catch, and a clamping lever pivoted at one end to the ears of the main frame, having a lug near said pivoted end for contact with said pivoted frame and having its free end adapted to pass under said spring catch.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a clasp a shoulder against which the outer end of the consisting of three members, two of which are other pivoted member when the clasp is closed pivotally secured to the remaining member will engage and look said inner member I 5 eccentrically to each other, the free ends of against a return movement, substantially as 5 which two pivoted members are provided with set forth.
means for interlocking with each other when In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in thg cktsp is closed, substantially as set forth. presence of two witnesses.
s a new article of manufacture, a clasp consisting of three members, two of which WILLIAM HOYT' 10 are pivotally secured to the other member, one Witnesses:
above the other, the inner one of said pivoted J. B. THURSTON, members being provided at its outer end with CARRIE E. EVANS.
