F. E DE LONG.
' HOOK. No. 411,857. Patented Oct. 1, 1889.
WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
FRANK E. 'DE LONG, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO CHARLES F. DE LONG, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,857, dated October 1, 1889.
Application filed March 18, 1889. Serial No. 303,691; (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, FRANK E. DE LONG, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hooks or Fastenings for Garments, &c., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a hook or fastening for a garment, composed of front and rear portions or the hook proper and the shank formed of substantially parallel sides or bars, and a tongue having its'free end forming a loop coincident with the bend of the hook, said tongue and loop being intermediate of said side bars.
Figures 1 and 2 representperspeciive views of hooks or fastenings for garments, &c.,en1-
bodying my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts in the two figures.
' Referring to the drawings, A, Fig. l, represents a hook or fastening adapted more particularly for a garment, after the manner of a hook of a hook and eye. In Fig. 2 the hook is shown as connected with the frame of a suspender buckle or slide. Between the front and rear portions of the hook, and secured to a proper part thereof, is a spring-tongue B, which occupies part of the space between said -.portions, and is bowed or swelled outwardly so as to approach the front portion.
The front and rear portions of the hook have two side pieces, and the tongue 13 projects toward the front portion between said pieces. Continuous of the tongue is a loop C, which is coincident with the bend D of the hook and enters between the side pieces E thereof.
It will be seen that when an eye, loop, or ring is presented to the hook and drawn between the front and rear portions thereof it bears against the tongue and rides over the same, forcing it backward, so that said eye, &c., or ring is permitted to pass to the bond D,tl1e tongue then closing or returning to its normal position and serving to retain the eye, &o., on the hook, it being noticed that the tongue prevents the return. or displacement of the eye, &c., from the hook, it being also noticed that the eye, &c., likewise engages with the loop C, and is seated in both the bend D and the loop C, the latter increasing the strength of the hook, as is evident, and also preventing the eye from slipping behind the tongue, it being seen that the loop 0 is sus tained between the side piecesE and the bend D, and the tongue B also occupies a position within the two side pieces of the hook. By these provisions both the tongue I; and the 6:: loop C are. laterally restrained by the side pieces when the hook is in use and subjected to strain.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hook pom prised of a hook proper and a shank formed of substantially parallel bars, and a tongue having its free end forming a loop coincident with the bend of the hook, said tongue and loop being intermediate of said side bars, substantially as described.
FRANK E. on LONG.
