SNAP-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 652,996, dated July 3, 1900. Application filed January 29, 1900. Serial No. 3,183. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. OOTTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county of Jackson and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Hooks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has relation to snap or other safety hooks wherein is employed a spring-actuated disk or latch device for opening or closing the open end of the hook; and the invention has for its object to improve this class, of safety-hooks in the several details of construction whereby the hook is rendered more practical and effective and easily operated, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my improved safety-hook, showing-it closed and the ring in dotted lines; Fig. 2, a side elevation showing the hook open ready for the engagement of the ring therewith; Fig. 3, detail perspective views of the several parts separated; Fig. 4, an edge view, partly in section.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the hook, having the opening a, said hook being cast or otherwise provided with a suitable loop B for attachment thereto of a strap, cord, or chain, as found desirable.
The hook A has a recess b, in which is seated a locking-disk C, said disk having a notch c at its periphery and shoulders d e,which abut against the shoulder f to limit the movement of the disk in either direction. The point of the hook A has a groove 9 upon its inner side, with which engages the edge of the lockingdisk 0 to form a guide therefor when the disk is being moved in either direction. A holeh is formed in the recessed portion of the hook, through which passes a suitable rivet 71, headed at both ends to hold the disk in the recessed seat and also a disk-spring which is concavo-convex in shape, as shown at D. The locking-disk O and the concavo-convex disk-spring D have-central holes, through which the rivet 1' extends to hold the disk and spring together and in position on the recessed seat. This concavo-convex spring D has a notch 10 to correspond with the notch c in the locking-disk and also a locking-notch Z in form to correspond with a lug m on the upper side of the disk 0.
When the disks 0 and the spring D are in position indicated in Fig. 1 0f the drawings, the opening in the hook is securely closed,
and the ring which engages the hook is prevented from being disconnected therewith. In removing the ring from the hook the ring is first engaged with the notch o of the disk C, and by pulling on the ring in the proper the notch c in the disk 0, and by pulling on the ring in the proper direction the disk will be turned to the position indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, thereby closing the opening a, and preventing the ring from being withdrawn. This concavoconvex spring D is the locking-disk 0 down with frictional contact upon the recessed seat b and prevent it fromslipping around accidentally. The lugm upon the locking-disk C, as well as the rivet z', prevents the disk-spring D from turning, thereby providing a very simple and effective snap or safety hook capable of use for many purposes.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A safety-hook provided with .a loop, a recessed seat and a shoulder therein to act as 'a stop, a rotatable locking-disk located in the recessed seat and having anotch, and a shoulder upon its edge to engage the stop, and a lug upon its face, and a concavo-convex diskspring located upon the locking-disk and having notches upon its edge to correspond in form and engage respectively with thenotch and the lug upon the locking-disk, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
