WILLIAM A. SGHLEICHER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
SNAP-HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 7, 1907.
Patented Apr. 5, 1910.
Serial No. 396,132.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. Seman- CHER, of Cleveland, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Snap-Hook, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side view of a snap hook embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the same; Fig. 3 is a plan view with one of the ring-forming members removed; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the removed member.
My invention relates to the class of snap hooks, and is designed to provide a simple, strong and eflicient hook which can be manufactured rapidly and at a comparatively small cost, and which can be attached to a chain, the invention havingparticular referonce to the construction of the ring end of the hook.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 2 designates the hook proper, whose shank portion 3 terminates at its rear end in a half-hook member 4;. The shank portion is also longitudinally recessed or cut through, as indicated at 5, to receive the downwardly bent end of the tongue 6, which is shown as pivotally engaged with a transverse pin 7 extending across said recess. In the preferred construction, the rear end of the tongue is formed with lips S, which are closed around said pin.
9 is the tongue spring, which is seated in the recess or cut-away portion, and which bears upwardly against the under side of the tongue.
10 is a member in the form of a half-hook, which is applied to the half-hook member 4 to form the complete eye or ring for the attachment of the chain. Both the members 4: and 10 are of half thickness where they are applied to each other, the extremity 11 of the hook member 10 fitting the beveled shoulder 12 of the hook member 4, one of said members having a projection 13 adapted to enter a corresponding recess 13 of the other member, to more securely hold the parts against displacement. The member 10 is also formed with a shoulder or offset 14 at its shank, which fits the shoulder or offset 15 at the base of the hook member 4 and a forwardly projecting portion 17 overlying the rear end of the tongue and cut away portion 5. The two members are secured together by a through-rivet 16. The tongue and its spring can be applied to the hook before the separate hook member 10 is socured thereto.
The construction shown and described forms a simple and strong construction, and one which permits the tongue-hook to be seated and secured without difiiculty. I do not, however, limit myself to the exact construction which I have herein shown and described, since my invention is applicable to hooks of various forms having tongues of different shapes and pivoted in other ways. The form and arrangement of the tongue and spring may also be varied.
Vhat I claim is 1. A snap hook having its shank portion formed with an opening therethrough, a tongue having its end portion pivoted in said opening, said shank portion having a curved hook like extension in the roar of said opening, a com )lemcntary member interfitting with the shank and with the extension to form a closed ring or eye, a portion of said complementary member overlying the pivotal end of the tongue and forn'ling a portion of the rear wall of the opening therefor, and means to secure the shank and eomplementmy member to each other; substantially as described.
2. A snap hook having its shank formed with an opening thcretlu'ough, a tongue having its end portion pivoted in said opening, a portion of the rear wall of the opening being formed integrally with the shank, a curved hook like extension in the rear of said opening, a complementary member inter-fitting with the shank and with the extension to form a closed ring or eye, a portion of said complementary member overlapping the end of said opening for the tongue and forming the other portion of the rear wall of said opening, a rivet extending through the extension and complementary member to retain them in fixed relation with each other, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
WVILLIAM A. SCHLETCHER.
