UNITED STATES I Patented September 22, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES B. HARRIS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO L. C. CHASE e COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
FASTENER on CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters IEatent No. 739,673, dated September 22, 1903.
Application sied september 25, 1902 To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massa- Fasteners or Clasps, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like figures on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to fasteners or clasps which are adapted for various uses, such as' curing together the edges of a horse-blanket,= or for use in any place where it is desired to detachably secure together two parts.
The clasp comprises two members, each of which has a shoulder adapted to engage'the shoulder of the other member, and one of said members has a resilient holding-tongue adapted to engage the other member and hold the shoulders in engagement. Preferably, also, one of the members will be provided at its edges with holdingears, which engage the sides of the other member and serve to assist in holding the members together. In this embodiment of my invention two members are each formed from a piece of sheet metal, and the shoulder on one of said members will be formed by making an aperture therein', the side of the aperture serving as a shoulder,'while the shoulder on the other member will be formed by bending a portion of the metal to form a lateral projection, which is adapted to enter the recess in the other member. The resilient tongue is preferably made by making a substantially U-shaped out in one member, and in order that the tongue may lie in substantially the plane of the Vtwo members l preferably bend or offset the inner portion of the member having the tongue, such offset portion receiving the end of the other member. A
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved fastener with the parts locked together. Fig. 2 is a view of the reverse side from that shown in Fig. 1, with the parts separated. Fig. Y3 is a section'on the line :t fr, Fig. 1; and Fig. t is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the'way in which the parts are disengaged.
The two members ofthe clasp are each preferably made from sheet metal and are desig- Serial No. 124,740. (No model.)
nated by 3 and 4, respectively, each of said members being of such a construction, as will be presently described, that they may be stamped out.
The member eis provided with a suitable locking-shoulder 5, which is shown as extending transversely of said member and which is conveniently made by bending a portion of themetal to form the lip or shoulder 5. The other member 3 has a cooperating shoulder, and the two shoulders are held in locking engagement by means of a Aresilient tongue 8, which is attached to or formed integral with the member 3 and which when the two memv bers are locked together engages the outer face of the member 4. Ivhave herein illustrated said tongue as beingformed by making a substantially U-shaped incision 9 inthe member 3, thus leaving the tongue 8, under which the end of the member t may be inserted, and thisy construction permits of my employing the transverse edge 7 of the cut or incision as the shoulder on the member 3, it being understood that the width of the U-shaped cutis sufficient so that the opening made will receive the lip 5. ln order that the two members may lie in substantially the same plane, even though .the end of one overlaps the end of the other, I will preferably offset the inner end 10 of the member 3, as best shown in Figs. 3 and 4, to form a shoulder 11, against which the inner end 12 of the memberet abuts when the said members are in operative locking position. One of the members, preferably the member 4, is provided at each edge with the holding-ears 13, which are adapted to engage the sides of the member 3, and thus prevent any relative lateral movement of the members. I will preferably construct the said ears at an inclination to the central line of the clasp and will construct the member 3 with correspondingly-inclined sides 14. By thus making the holding-ears 13 nearest together at the inner end of the member 4 and by forming the member 3 with the coperating Haring sides 14 theears 13 serve not only to preventlateral displacement of either member, but also assist in preventing the members from becoming disengaged, as will be obvious. Assuming that the members are locked together, as in Fig. 3, they may be Fig. 4 the said member may be moved longitudinally sufficiently to allow the lip or shoulder 5 to enter the aperture 7. Each of said members may have any suitable aperture therein for the purpose of attaching the same to the garment or other material on which they are to be used, and, as illustrated, said apertures are designated by 17 and may be made in any suitable way, as by slitting said member and bending the cut portion back upon the body thereof.
Although I have herein described one form of my invention, it will be obvious that the invention is not limited to the precise form shown, but may be varied in various ways wit-hout departing therefrom. For instance, while I have herein illustrated and described my improved fastener as being made from sheet metal, I wish it understood that one of the two parts of the device may be made of cast metal, if desired, or the ears 13 and lip 5 may be soldered or otherwise secured to the member 4 instead of being bent up from the body of said member, and many other such similar changes made Without departing from my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A fastener or clasp comprising two members, one having an aperture and a resilient holding-tongue between which and the body of said member the end of the other member is adapted to be received, and said latter member having between its ends a lip projecting at right angles to the plane of said member, and adapted to be inserted through bers, each formed from sheet metal, one mem-v ber having a lip and holding-ears at its edges, and the other member having an aperture to receive said lip, and aresilient holdingtongue to `hold said lip in engagement with the aperture, said holding-ears engaging the sides of said last-named member. u
4. A fastener or clasp comprising two members, one of said members having a lip and inclined holding-ears at its edges, and the other member having a recess to receive said lip and a resilient holding-tongue to engage said first-named member and hold the lip in the recess, said inclined holding-ears engaging correspondingly-shaped edges of said lastnamed member. f
5. A fastener or clasp comprising two members, each formed of sheet metal, one member having a lip or projection and the other member having a recess to receive said projection, and a resilient holding device to hold said members in engagement, one of said members having that portion thereof which is overlapped by the other member offset whereby the two members lie in the saine plane.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES B. HARRIS.
