To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY R. SANDHQL- ZER, residing at- Richmond Hill, county of Queens, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap-Fastenersrand I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fastening devices, and particularly to improvements in two-part snap fasteners of the type which includes a pair of duplicat members.
An important object of the invention is to provide a fastener in which the two identical members when snapped into engagement will not only be locked together against accidental coming apart, but willalso be prevented from lateral play or looseness between them.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fastener of this type in which each part consists of a single piece of sheet metal without loose parts or projecting tongues capable of deformation, and of a design to be produced by a simple stamping operation whereby the fasteners are exceedingly rugged and may be made at very small cost.
The invention will be clearly understood from the following description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein I have illustrated an approved design of fastener. In this drawing,

Each member of the snap fastener is first formed as a blank punched preferably from a thin sheet of some resilient metal, as spring brass, the outline of the fastener as thus punched being substantially rectangular as shown in Fig. 8, to avoid waste of material. This blank consists of a main portion 5 and an auxiliary leaf portion 6, a transverse straight slot 8 marking the line of division between the two portions. The leaf portion is folded back over the main portion with its bounding edge lying within and slightly spaced from the bounding edge ofthe'main" portion, thus providing the main portion with a projecting margin for the stitch-receiving holes 10. VVhenthe leaf portion is folded backoverth main portion the center line of the, slot is coincident with the line on which the portions are bent, and the leaf portion is provided with a rib 9 punched up therefrom preferably when the blank is first formed, and lying parallel with the slot, the rib being high enough to almost contact with the main portion.
The end of the leaf portion is cut out on each side as indicated at 11 to form a tongue 7 slightly narrower than the slots. The rib 9 is positioned nearer the slot than the end of the tongue so that when the two fasteners are caught together as shown in Fig. 4, the tongue of each member will be projected through the slot of the opposite member before the ribs engage. The fastener members are engaged by arranging them to overlap and then drawing them away from each other to cause the tip of each leaf portion to pass between the leaf and the main portion of the other member, so that the tongue of each will enter the slot of the other.
The notches 11 form shoulders on each side of the tongue 7 which engage against the metal in the bend of the fastener on each side-of the slot 8 when the ribs 9 are in the positions shown in Fig. 4, that is, with their crests overlapped but with their faces toward the slots still in engagement, so that the leaf portion of each part is resiliently pressed against the main portion of the other part and the tongues held fully projected into the slots.
By this arrangement all looseness between the fastener parts is prevented and the two parts of the garment or other article to be fastened together, are held square with each other and against gapping apart between the fasteners.
I claim:
1. A member for a two-part fastener, the two parts of which are duplicates, such member consisting of a sheet metal blank having a part bent or folded back substantially parallel with the other part, a transverse aperture in the fastener at the bend therein, and a tongue constituting a prolongation of the free end of one part of a width less than the length of said slot.
2. A fastener of the kind described comprising a part to be attached to thearticle to be fastened, an elongated slot cut through said part, a free end portion bent back over said part, said free end portion terminating in a tongue of a width less than the length of said slot, with shoulders at the base of said tongue on each side to engage the metal in the bend at each end of said slot.
3. A fastener of the kind described consisting of a sheet metal blank having a part bent or folded back substantially parallel with the other. part, a transverse aperture in the fastener at the bend therein, a tongue constituting a prolongation of the free end of one part of a width less than the length of said slot, and a projection on the face of said bent over part between said aperture and the tongue.

A fastener of the kind described comprising a part to be attached to the article to be fastened, an elongated slot cut through said part, a free end portion bent back over said part adjacent to the slot cut therein, said free end portion terminating in a tongue of a width less than the length of said slot, with shoulders at the base of said tongue on each side to engage the metal in the bend at each end of said slot, and a rib on the inner face of said bent over end between said slot and said shoulders with the crown of the rib slightly nearer the shoulders than the slot.
5. A fastener of the kind described, comprising a main portion, an auxiliary leaf portion bent back over the main portion, and an elongated slot cut through the material of the fastener and arranged laterally of the fastener so that the center line of the slot substantially coincides with the line on which the leaf is bent.

A fastener of the kind described, comprising a main portion, an auxiliary leaf portion bent back over the main portion, and an elongated slot cut through the material of the fastener and arranged laterally of the fastener so that the center line of the slot substantially coincides with the line on which the leaf is bent, and an elongated rib formed on the leaf portion so as to have its convexity facing the main portion when the leaf portion is bent as described.
- 7 A fastener of the kind described, comprising a main portion, an auxiliary leaf portion bent back over the main portion, and an elongated slot cut through the material of the fastener and arranged laterally of the fastener so that the center line of the slot substantially coincides with the line on which the leaf is bent, and an elongated rib formed on the leaf portion, substantially parallel with the slot.
8. A fastener of the kind described, comprising a main portion, an auxiliary leaf portion bent back over the main portion, and an elongated slot cut through the material of the fastener and arranged laterally of the fastener so that the center line of the slot substantially coincides with the line on which the leaf is bent, and an elongated rib formed on one of the portions substantially parallel with the slot.

A fastener of the kind described, comprising a main portion, an auxiliary leaf portion bent back over the main portion, and an elongated slot cut through the material of the fastener and arranged laterally of the fastener so that the center line of the slot substantially coincides with the line on which the leaf portion is bent, said auxiliary leaf portion carrying in prolongation of its free end a tongue of reduced width and of less width than the length ofthe slot.
10. A fastener composed of two duplicate members each consisting of a sheet metal hook having a transverse slot in the bend of the hook and a tongue projecting from the free end of the hook to fit into the slot of the opposite member, a stop on each member for engaging the bend of the hook of the other member adjacent the slot of the latter member to limit the extent to which the tongues project through the slots, and cooperating resilient projections carried by the members at a distance from the slots and po-' sitioned to be drawn slightly past each other when the two parts of the fastener are hooked together.
