Description

Dec. 18, 1923. m4752692 K W. cHRlsToPl-IEL TRUNK BOLT Filed Jan. 16, 1922 Patented Dee. 1S, 1923.
renner -LEWIS CHRISTOPHEL, DEST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
TRUNK BOLT.
Application led January 16, 1922.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Lnwrs W. CHRISTO- PHEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trunk Bolts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to trunk bolts.
An object of the invention is to provide a trunk bolt of stronger and better construction than those heretofore commonly used.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved trunk bolt comprising two members, one of which is provided with a number of tongues engaging the other member, and one of which is provided with a loop for effecting engagement with the other member to secure the two members to-A gether.
Other objects will appear from the following description, reference being made to the drawing in which- F ig. 1 is a front view of a trunk bolt of my improved construction with the two members secured together.
Fig. 2 is a front view showing the two members separated and the loop in released position.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The embodiment of the invention shown comprises a member 1 attached by rivets 2 to one of the parts of a trunk; and a member 3 attached by rivets 4 to the other part of the trunk. W'hen the trunk is closed the members 1 and 3 abut together edgewise. A. lever support 5 is attached to the member 3 and supports a pin 6 on which a lever 7 is mounted` A loop 8 is pivotally supported by the lever 7 and is engageable with 'and releasable from a shoulder 9 on the member 1 attached to the other part of the trunk. By raising the 1:ever 7 the loop 8 may be engaged with or disengaged from the shoulder 9. After the loop 8 is placed in position for engagement with the shoulder 9 the 1iever 7 is depressed, thereby drawing the loop 8 close against the shoulder 9 and securely holding the trunk closed. The lever '7 is formed with an extension 10 cooperating with a strong leaf spring 11 which is effective to hold the lever 7 in its lower adjustment.
As shown the member 1 is formed with a projecting tongue 12 shaped to engage Serial No. 529,476.
against the outer surface of the member 3 within the lever support 5 when the trunk is closed.
The member 1 is also provided with raised ribs 13, one at each side of the shoulder 9. The end of each of the ribs 13 is formed with a projecting tongue 14 which when the trunk is closed engage within the raised portions 15 of the member 3, said raised portions 15 being on opposite sides of the lever support 5. Thus while the tongue 13 engages on the outer side of the member 3 the tongues 14 engage on the inner sides of the raised portions 15 of said member 3.
This construction provides a strong interlock between the two members so that the entire trunk bolt structure is strengthened and improved.
From the foregoing it will be seen that my invention constitutes a genuine improvement in this art and obtains all of its intended objects and purposes. The construction and arrangement may be varied without departure from the nature and scope of the present invention.
I do not restrict myself unessentially, but what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. A trunk bolt, comprising a pair of cooperating members, a locking bolt carried by one member and engaging the other to lock said members together, a pair of tongues carried by one member and engaging receivers in the other member, and a third tongue depending from one of said members disposed between said first mentioned tongues and adapted to pass into a socket in the other member when said meinbers are united, said last mentioned tongue being composed of a strap of metal having a rebent part engaging its supporting member, a head thereon constituting an engaging element for the bolt, and a downwardly eX- tending part receivable in said socket in the other member.
2. A trunk bolt comprising a pair of cooperating members, a locking bolt carried by one member and engaging the other to lock said members together, a pair of tongues carried by one member and engaging receivers in the other member, and a third tongue depending from one of said members disposed between the said first mentioned tongues and adapted to pass into a socket in the othermember Whenthe inem from said strap of metal and constituting bers are united, saidlast mentioned tongue an engaging element for the; boltp and a being composed of a strap of metal having. a downwardly extending bolt receivable in 10 rebent portion at one end thereof, one of said socket in the other cooperating mem- -said cooperating meinbers@ having a slot berwhenthparte'arelplaced in operative therein to engage and support the rebent position. portion of said tongue, a head -fashioned LEWIS W.
