Application filed August 1, 1-92tfSer1a1'Ilo. 723,469;
To all whom 2'25 'may con-cern:
Be it known that I, DAVID-A. BoswELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Protected Pin; and I- do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, 'refen ence being had to the accompanying drawparts.
This invention relates toa safety pin having peculiar clniracteristics.
The chief object'o'f the invention is to construct a safety pin in such a manner that thenormal tendency of the pin portion is to seat itself upon the catch portion and an other object of the invention is to construct the catch or seat portion in such a manner that thecooperating parts thereof may be associated together for positively locking the pin upon its seat and with the incidental feature in all instances of protecting or guarding the pin point.
An incidental feature of the inventiom in addition to the accomplishment of-the foregoing objects, is the arrangement of the coiled connection between thepin and the haclgavliei'eby the cloth is prevented from becoming entangled with the several portions cooperating and forming said coil connection. i I
The full nature of the invention will be understood fronrthe accompanying drawings' and the following description and claims: r
In the drawings Fig. 1 isa perspective view of one form of the invention showing the parts in the normal position.
Fig. 2 is a'nend view thereof. a
"Fig. 3 is a perspectiveview of another ings, in which like numerals refer to like and modified form of the invention.
Fig. if is an end view of the modification Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the third no di ficationof the invention. I
' Fig. 6 is anend view of {the modification shown in Fig, r r g p Y In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings 10 lIlCllcates aloop of at least a single turn. One
end of the loop is herein shown including an angularextension 11 which forms a, pin terminating in the pointed end 12. Theother end of the loop is also provided with an angular extension 13, which herein is shown substantially parallel to the pin. 11.
The endofsaid extension 13,;however, is curred upwardly, rearwardly; and inwardly 'asat 14. It is also turned ba-cknpon itself to. form another similarly curved portion 15, lying adjacent the ifirst mentioned curved portion lewThese two portions l i-and 15 Y have a normal. tendency, by reasonof the resiliency 1n the w re forming; the pin; to separate and leave the pinctlon 16 of said curvedportions in pin receiving or-seat forn'iing relation. The curved: portion 15 is extended rearwardly'asrat 17 which ad acent the loop 10 is provided witlran angular portion 18 that is suitably secured to the pin portion ll as indicated at; 19.
The two parallel portionslil and 1'7 con-- stitute the back of the pin. They may he fsuitablv secured together as bymeans of the ferrule 20. If desired, the aforemen tioned securing means may be omitted and other or vequivalent means utilized. Soldering or welding may also; be utilized. Also the two base portions 13-and 17 may be twist-ed 'or' coiled upon each other fori 'secur ing the same in relatively-rigid relation oftheinvention.
The curved portions, however, which formthe pin receiving socket. or seat are separated and normally tend to separate.
without departing from the broad feature There is provided, therefore; a locking 1nemher in the form of a clip 215the ends 22 of which are adapted to be slidably mounted upon the-two curved portions 14c-and '15.
Said locking member or clip constitutes a locking :cam for-as it is slid upon said. curved portion and toward the point or junctionthereof, said curved portions are caused to approach each other which not only locks' the p n-lathe seat, but prevents long tudinal movement therein.
' As shown by the dotted lines'in Fig. 1,
said locking clip inay be positioned such that it not only constitutes a locking memher, bu't also a protective member. It covers.
the intervening space between the .two curved portions '14 and 15 ad acentthe seat l6 and thus covers the pin point when seat-ed.- As shown "clearly bythe dotted lines and the arrow, the pin 11 is so assoclated with the back that isfthe coil conne-ction is sowound; that the pin normally tends to seat itself in contra-distinction to the usual safety pin construction, wherein the pin normally tends to position itself in open relation rather than in closed relation.
Thezadva-ntages of the; reverse construction disclosed herein" are obvious although the chief one is that the pin will always, be closed or seated when, not positivelyactuated.
In Figs; 3 and form of pin is shown and in this form of the invention the pin portion 111 is suitably connected to the coil connection 110, which in thisinstance is of ad-ifferent character from that shoivnin F ig; 1 but is similarly operative in that the'pin normally tends to seat itself when: released- The back portion 113 is also provided with the curved portion 114 at its free end, which is connected to a similarly curved; portion 115 bythe junction or seat 116 The back forming extension 117 lies parallel to the back portion 113 and: is suitably secured thereto as by means of the ferule 120-01 equivalent means The end 118 is suitably securedas at 119*so as to assist in the seating movement of the pin. The lock-' ing member 121 includes the curved member engaging portions 122 and the protective extension 123. The-coiled connection 110 is so arranged. that alock is positioned at each side of the plane including pin 1'11 and back 113.
This cooperation of the several parts is substantially "that. previously 1 described with reference to the form ofthe invention shown in. Fig. 1.v InFigs. 5 and 6a further form of the invention isillustrated and in this form of theinvention the pin 211 connected at one end to the" coil portion'2'10, which in turn is connected to a base'forming member 213 hating. the curved" free end 214. Another member 217 is' suitably connected in rigid relation by the ferule' 220 or suitable means previously pointed out and the portion 219 is adaptedto secure the free end thereof, if' necessary. The member 217 includes-a curved: portion 215 lyingadjacent the' curved portion 214 and the'ends of said members are suitably connected; together as by means of the rivet 216= -A locking member 221 having the sl-idably supported portions 222 is adapted to be associated With the curved portions 214 and 215 in the same cooperative relation previousliy pointed out for similar parts in the other forms of the invention. In this instance, similar to 2, coiled connection I 210 is arranged in: balanced relation with respect to pin: 211' and seat 113.
4 From the foregoing, therefore, it will be readily apparent that various modifications of the invention will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art. These modifications including those herein illustrated and described, are all considered to be Within the broad purview of the invention, reference being had 'tothe appended claims.
, The invention claimed is:
