HENRY CROCKER, OF BRISTOL, RHODE ISLAND.
BOOK-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part; of Letters Patent No, 314,436, dated Maroh24, 1885.
Application filed March 18, 1984. (X0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY ORooxER, of Bristol, in the county of Bristol and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Book-H0lders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to devices for holding a number of books together in upright position upon book-shelves or on tables, or in other like places; and the object of my invention is to simplify and cheapen such devices, and also to increase their efficiency.
My invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction and arrangement of the holder, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved holder, showing its application to a number of books. Fig. 2 is a view of the same detached from the books and connected by a modified form of elastic.
In the said drawings, Adcsignates the body of one member of the holder, which may be of sheet metal, having either the outline shown or any other suitable form. The upper edge of the body is stamped out wit-h three extensions a a and a. The extensions are bent down parallel to the outer side ofthe body in such manner as to leave a space between the extensions and the side of the body, as shown inFig. 2. The extension at is bent in the opposite direction from the extensions on, and
outer end of the extension a is formed ahook or an eye, as shown in the drawings.
B in Fig. 1 designates an elastic band, which is secured to each of the extensions (1 by a ring which embraces the band, and passes through the eye in the extension. Of course, the band may be simply placed over a hook at the end of the extension. In Fig. 2 the elastic connec tion is shown asa coiled-wire spring, B,which is secured to the holders in the same manner as the band in Fig. 1.
I have described the simplest and cheapest form of my improved holder, but the body A and extensions a a a may be formed of a cast ing in lieu of sheet metal. The body A is insert-ed between the outside covers and the pages of the end books, with the extensions a a lying against the outer side of the cover. The. elastic connection B or B serves by contract-ion to draw the books together, and thus keeps all of the books upright and in close order.
Having thus described my invention, I claim The combination, with the bodies A A, having the extensions a a and a of an elastic connection, B or B, secured to the extension a, substantially as and for the purposes described.
HENRY OROOKER.
