HENRY CROGKER, OF BRISTOL, RHODE ISLAND.
BOOK-HOLDER.
fiPlEiCIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314387, dated March 24, 1885.
Application filed March 18, 1884. (No mode'.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY ORooKER, of Bristol, in the county of Bristol and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to devices for holding books, pamphlets, papers, and the like in up- .right position upon partially-filled shelves, the
object of my invention being to simplify and cheapen such devices, while increasing their efficicncy; and to these ends my invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of the holder, substantially as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved holder. Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate two methods of using the same.
In the said drawings, A designates the body of my holder, which may be made of sheet metal, and at one end the said body is bent downward at right angles, as at a, while a tongue, a, is stamped out of the substance of the body andforms an integral part thereof. The tongue a is then bent upward in such manner as to have about the curvature shown in the drawings.
I have described the simplest form of my invention; but the body A may be made of a casting having the downturned portion, and
the tongue a may be made separate from the body, and secured thereto in any of the usual ways.
In Fig. 2 the holder is shown as applied to a bookshelf. In this application the body A lies upon the tops of several of the books, and the downturned portion a rests against the outer side of the end book, while the tongue extends upward and thrusts into the under side of the shelf above. The shelf may or may not be grooved or serrated on its under side,
as shown, to assist the action of the tongue.
\Vhen the holder is applied as shown in Fig. 2, more than one book is required to remain under the holder.
In Fig. 3 I have shown an application of the device in such manner that but one book is required for the holder. In this instance the downturned portion a rests upon the top of the book, and the body A rests against the outer side of the book, while the tongue extends upward and thrusts into the under side of the shelf above. Thus it will be seen that I have produced a simple, cheap, and eiticient holder for the purposes stated.
Having thus described my invention, I clai m- The plate A, provided with a bent portion, a, and tongue a, substantially as specified.
HENRY CROGKER.
