To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHRISTIAN HIERING and ALBERT FULLER, citizens of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county of Essexand State of New J orsey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Fasteners; and we do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of our invention is to simplify the structure of abag fastener, so as to render the same positive yet effective in operation, simple in construction, and durable in use.
In carrying out our invention, we make use of the various structures illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 illustrates a side elevation of a bag frame'having an improved bag fastener at either end of the frame. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the improved bag fastener. Fig. 1 is an under planview-of the same. Fig. 5 is an end view of the same. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of such bag fastener taken on line aa-m of Fig. 4;. Figs. 7 and S are sectional views of the same, representing the bag fastener in its open and closed position. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the chambered base of said bag fastener. Fig. 10 is a perspective view of the spring. Fig. 11 is a perspective view of the slidable looking member. Fig. 12 is a perspective view of the operating lever. WVe provide adjacent to each end of one of the bag frame members a, a chambered metal cap Z), secured to the bag frame by means of a pair of integral tongues 0, inserted through apertures in the bag frame member or, and clenched over in any suitable and convenient manner. The chambered cap 6 as illustrated, is provided upon one side with a rectangular notch d for the reception of the hook or clip 6, such hook or clip being secured to the opposite hinged member f. The forward end of the hook or clip 6 is provided with a rectangular notch g as clearly shown in Fig. 17.
The cap .7) and hook e are made rights and lefts and so located upon the respective bag frame members a and 7" respectively, that the hoolemember will register with the notch cl, with the notch g entirely within the chambered cap. Slidably secured within the chambered cap Z is the locking memberh, channel-formed in cross-section, and having -a rectangular notch z' in one of its sides,
which is in slidable registry with the rectangular notch (Z of the cap 6.
The operating lever or handle 7' is provided with a member 1 11, that is adapted to extend through a slot Z in the chambered cap I), so as to bear upon the spring m, as in Figs. 6, 7 and 15, and against an offset 8 of the locking member 71-, as in Fig. 141, to The operating lever or handle j is provided with trunnions n, which are journaled between struck-up bearing portions 0 of the chambered cap Z). By these means, the operating lever or handle 9*" is pivotally supported in the chambered cap I and is prevented from being pushed outwardly through the 'slot 1 in the cap 6, by the pivots a, and from being pushed inwardly bythe spring at in one case and by the offset on the locking member h in the other case.
The spring at may be of any desired form, and is conveniently secured by means of a rivet or pin 39 to the under side of the chambered cap 6. One end of the spring m is provided with a turned-over extension 9, for the reception and positioning of a spiral spring 1", which is conveniently interposed between the inner end wall of the chambered cap Z) and one wall of the slidable locking member /2, for the purpose of giving return longitudinal movement to said slidable looking member after said locking member has been forced over into one position by the manipulation of the operating lever or handle The preferred forms of our invention are illustrated in Figs. lt and 15 of the drawings, in which the improved bag fastener consists essentially of three and four members respectively. In Fig. 14:, the device illustrated comprises the chambered cap Z), to which is secured by the means above described, the operating handle or lever j, the locking member it which is in engagement with the offset 8 of said locking member h, and the spiral spring r conveniently interposed in the cap 6 'to return the locking member to its original position after the lever or handle j has moved the locking member out of engagement with the notch g of the hook or clip 0, and also to operate the locking member, thereby permitting the hook or clip 6 to enter the rectangular notch 65 in the cap 6, and cause the notch g of the hook or clip 6 to engage with the notch 2' of the locking member it, when the operating handle or lever j is in its closed posit-ion, as shown in Figs' 1' and 3 of the drawings. In Fig. 15, the device illustrated, consists essentially of the chambered cap I), the spring m conveniently secured thereto, and the operating lever or handle j. In this particular structure, the slidable locking member 71 is dispensed with and the operating lever or handle j is provided with a depend ing lug or flange 6, designed to pass through the opening at in the cap I) in its downward movement, and to engage with the opening 9 formed in the hook or clip 6.
WVhen the operating lever of this structure is in its closed position, and the hook or clip 6 out of engagement with the rectangular notch (Z of the cap 6, the lug or flange t of the operating handle or lever j, is in front of said opening (Z, and in order to bring the hook or clip 6 in looking engagement with the cap, it will only be necessary to bring the two frame members together, which causes the bevel portion of the hook or clip 6 to enter the rectangular notch (Z of the cap Z), thereby coming in contact with the correspondingly beveled flange i and causing the same to ride up on said bevel portion, and then snap into engagement with the opening 9 formed in said clip.

When the operating lever is brought back to its closed position, the spiral spring 1" will force the locking member back in its natural position.
In Figs. 2-0 to 26 inclusive, the device illustrated consists essentially of the chambered cap Z), provided with two rectangular notches (Z for the reception of a hook or clip provided with two similar notches, as the notch g of the hook or clip 6 shown. The top of the chambered cap Z2 is provided with three slots a for the reception of. the tongues '0, which are formed integrally with the slidable operating member o, said tongues passing through the slots u, in the cap 6 and fitting into the recesses u formed in the member to, and then bent over on the member w, thus combining the slidable operating member t with the member '10, so that both have sliding engagement with the cap I) through the slots u and the tongues 41.

One end of the member w is provided with a tongue y for the reception and positioning of a spiral spring y, which is conveniently interposed between the tongue y and the inner end wall of the cap I), for the purpose I of giving return movement to said slidable locking member w, and its attached parts,
after said member and parts have been forced over into one position by the manip ulation of the operating member 0, or by V bers, a chambered cap secured to one of said members, a single locking member slidably secured within said cap, said locking member being provided with notches in its front wall, means arranged above the cap and secured to the locking member for operating and permitting independent movement of the same, a spring located within the cap, and a locking clip rigidly secured to the other frame member for engagement with said locking element.
In a bag fastener, the combination of a chambered cap provided with slots in its upper side, a locking member located in said cap, means slidably arranged above the cap, and provided with means passing through the said slots for operating and permitting independent movement of the locking member, and a spring located within the cap and adapted to bear upon said locking member to retain it in a locked position.

In a bag fastener, the combination of a chambered cap provided with slots in its upper side, a locking member located within said cap, means slidably arranged above the cap, and provided with means passing through the said slots and slidably secured to said locking member for operating the same, and a spring located within the cap and adapted to bear upon said locking member to retain it in a locked position.
In a bag fastener, the combination of a chambered cap notched in its front wall and slotted in its upper wall, a single independent notched locking member slidably secured within said cap, means slidably arranged above the cap and provided with means passing through the slotted upperwall and slidably secured to said locking member for operating and permitting inde pendent movement of the same, and a spring located within the cap and adapted to bear upon said locking member to maintain it in a locked position.
6. In a bag fastener, the combination of a cap slotted in its upper wall, a spring actuated independent and notched locking member slidably secured within said cap, means slidably arranged above the cap and provided with means designed to pass through the slotted upper wall and secured to said locking member for operating and permitting independent movement of the same, and a spring located within the cap and designed to bear upon said locking member to maintain it in a locked position.
