Description

C. HOFFMAN DOOR FASTENER Filed Aug. 11; 1923 Aug. 4, 1925.
Patented Aug. 4, 1925.
UNITED STATES Parent react.
DOOR FASTENER.
Application filed August 11,1923.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CARL HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
This invention relates to door fasteners and particularly to a fastener adapted for looking a door in either closed or partially open position.
An object of this invention is to provide a latch and keeper for a'door and jamb to lock the door in closed position and to secure an operating means to the latch adapted for locking cooperation with the keeper to fasten the door in partially open position.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a latch and keeper for a doorand j aml to lock the door in closed position and an operating member for the latch adapted for association with an auxiliary latching means carried by the keeper for fastening the door in partially open position.
A further object of this invention is to provide a latch rotatably mounted on a jamb adapted for engagement with a keeper plate secured to a door, the latch being provided with an arm pivoted thereto acting as a handle for operating the latch and being further provided with an auxiliary keeper adapted for association with a pivoted member carried by the keeper plate which is adapted to secure the auxiliary keeper to said plate for locking the door in partially open position.
The invention includes further objects and novel details of construction specifically pointed out in the following description and zlaims and shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention applied to a door and j amb with the parts positioned to fasten the door in partially open position. Figure 2 is a persective view showing the door in closed position and the parts being disengaged sothat the door may be locked in closed position, and Figure 3 shows an elevation of the door and jamb with the parts positioned to lock the door in closed position.
1 indicates the door adapted to close in the jamb 2 which is provided with a plate 3 Serial No. 656,851.
supporting a rotatable spindl 4 having a latch 5 formed therewith and projecting laterally therefrom. An elongated rod-like member 6 has one end pivotally connected with the spindle 4L indicated at 7 and the other end provided with an auxiliary keeper 8 projecting laterally therefrom and provided with an opening at 9.
A keeper plate 10 is secured to the inner face of the door and is adapted to cooperate with the latch 5 to hold the door in closed position and take the wear of said latch. The keeper plate 10 is provided with a stud 11 to which is pivotally secured a. guiding and auxiliary locking member 12 which is adapted for insertion in the opening of auxiliary keeper 8 and for guiding said keeper in the opening movement of the door to a position shown in Figure 1 after which the mei'nber 12 is moved on its pivot to lie against the door as shown in Figure 1 for locking the door in partially open position and against a further opening or closingmovement. In order to insure retention of the member 12 in locked relation with the auxiliary keeper a catch 13 is rotatably mounted in the keeper plate 10 and is adapted to engage the member 12 and hold the same in locking position.
Figure 2 shows the door with the parts in position as it is being closed from the partially open position in Figure 1 the rod 152 guiding the keeper 8 in the closing movement of the door. From this position the rod 12 is disengaged from the keeper 8 and is swung back against the door and secured in this position by the catch 18 as shown in Figure 3 and the elongated member 6 is used as a handle for operating the catch 5 to rotate the same and bring it in engagement with the keeper plate 10 for locking the door in closed position. The progression from closed position, as shown in Figure 2, to the partially open position, as shown in Figure 1, in which the rod 12 interlocked with the keeper 8 has been moved on its pivot and secured against the door by the catch looking the keeper 8 therewith and holding the door in partially open position is apparent.
It is to be noted that the parts illustrated in the drawing and above described are adapted for use with a door which opens inwardly the parts being shown secured to the inner face of the door and jamb.
I claim as my invention:
1. A door fastener including a door carried element and a jamb carried element, one of said elements being movable for engaging the other to lock the door in closed position, operating means for the movable element, said operating means be'inga dapted for engagement with the other element, and positive independently operable means for locking said operating means in engagement with the other element for locking the door in partially opened position.
2. A door fastener including a keeper, and a latch, one mounted on the door and the other on the jamb, and adapted for cooperation to lock the door in closed position, and an elongated member having pivotal connection with the latch for operating the same to engage or disengage it from the -keeper, and latch means carried with the keeper for cooperating with the free-end of the member for fastening the door in partially open position.
3. A door fastener including a keeper and a latch, one mounted on the door and the other on the jamb and adapted for cooperation to look the door in closed position, an elongated member pivotally connected with the latch, means carried with the keeper having. a sliding connection with the member from the closed position of the door to apartially open position-thereof, and locking means associated with the keeper for looking the membertherewith to fasten the door ill a partially open position.
plate mounted on the door, a latch rotata 1e on the jamb adapted for engagement with thekeeper plate to lock the door in closed position; an elongated member havlngone end pivotally connected with the latch adapted for operating saidlatoh and provided at the other end with an auxiliary keeper, an auxiliary latching and guiding member pivotally mounted on the keeper plate adapted for sliding cooperation with the auxiliary keeper for guiding the samein opening movement of the door and fbrinterlocking therewith to hold the door in partially open position, and a catch mounted on the keeper plate adapted for holding the auxiliary latching member in looking position.
In testimony whereof I have-signed this specification, a
- CARL HOFFMAN.
