UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
CARL HOFFMAN, or ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
DOOR FASTENER- Application filed August 11, 1923. Serial No. 656,852.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Fasteners, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to door fasteners and particularly to improvements in a door fastener adapted for locking a door in either closed or partially open position.
An object of this invention is to provide a keeper and a'latch mounted on a door and jamb adapted for locking the door in closed position and provided with operating means for the latch adapted for association with the keeper to lock the door in partially open position.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide akeeper and latch'for an outwardly opening door adapted to lock the door in closed position in which the latch is provided with an operating member adapted for locking cooperation with the keeper for holding the door in partially open position.
The invention further includes the pro vision of a U-shaped member having one leg pivotally connected with the latch and the other leg adapted for sliding movement through the keeper to guide it into locking cooperation with the keeper for fastening the door in partially open position.
The invention includes other objects and improvements in the details of construction which are particularly pointed out in the following description'and claims and shown in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an outwardly opening door showing my device mounted on the door and jamb and positioned for locking the door partially open. Figure 2 is a horizontal section through the door and jamb showing the invention in plan with the parts in unlocked position and the handle member shown in dotted lines in its position preparatory for the partial opening of the door, and Figure 3 is a horizontal section through the door and jamb showing a plan of the invention with the parts in position to lock the door closed.
1 in ic t s the j arch and 2 the door opening outwardly therefrom which is provided with a plate 3 rotatably supporting a spindle 4 from which projects the latch 5 adapted for locking cooperation with the keeper t3 mounted on the door jamb. The keeper is formed with a longitudinally extending recess 7 in the body portion thereof and an opening 8 communicating with said recess as shown in Figure 2. The keeper is provided with openings at 9 adapted to receive a looking pin 10 provided with a chain connection 11 secured under one of the attaching screws mounting the .keeper on the jamb. A U- shaped member 12 has one of its free ends or legs pivotally mounted in the spindle 1 as indicated at 13 and forms an operating handle for rotating the spindle to engage or disengage the latch from the keeper. The member 12 is adapted for sliding cooperation with the keeper, and the free end being inserted through the opening 8 and thus coupling the member and the keeper. When the door is opened as far as engagement be tween member 12 and keeper 6 will permit, pin 10 is positioned to prevent disengagement of the member 12 from the keeper thus effectively fastening the door in partially open position. An opening 14 is formed in the spindle L to receive the free end of the 'member 12 when the parts are in unlocked position, as shown in Figure 2, and serves to limit movement of said member toward the door thus. obviating any likelihood of the same being scarred.
Figure 3 shows the latch 5'in engagement with the keeper 6 in its position for locking the door in the closed position. By using the member '12 as an operating handle the latch may be rotated from the locked position in Figure 3 to the unlocked position as shown in Figure 2, and upon the movement of the member 12 into the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 2 the parts are ready for the movement of the door into partial open position.
It is to be noted that this invention is particularly adapted for use with doors opening outwardly and includes a slngle member adapted to act as an operating means for the latch and additionally to cooperate with the keeper for fastening the door in partially open position. When positioned as shown in Figure 1 for maintaining the door ajar, the member 12 effectual- 1y maintains the latch 5 in inoperative position so thatno. damage will be done to either latch or keeper should the pin 10,be removed and the door slammed shut.
I clairnas my invention:
1. A door fastener incliiding a keeper mounted on the door jamb, a rotatable latch mounted on the door for engagement with the keeper to lock the. door inclosedpbsh tion, a member secured to the latch 'forming.
anbperating handle therefor-to engage or disengage; the latclr from .the. keeper, and said member having a, keeper engaging portion adapted. for cooperative engagement with said keeper to lockthe door in, partly .open pos1ti0n,when..said latch lssininefiec- -in'-. closed position, .a.. member pivotally mounted on the. latch. forming. an opera-ting means for, the latchv and. also adapted for sliding engagement with the keeper and means for lockingthe memberto. the keeper .to. fasten the doorin1partially, open position 1 4'. A door. fastener including a keeper having, an opening formed therein. mounted on the: door jamb, a lateh.meunted onthe door adapted for engagement with the; keep- .er to lock the doon' 'inclosed position, a ussha-ped :member hea ing v one. leg. pivotally connected, to: the latch adapted. to, form an operatingmeans therefor, and. having. the other: leg, adapted; for slfidingamovement' in .the; opening in the. keeper, and; means for locking thegmemher in engagement- Wi-tli the keeper for: holding the..door in partially open-positiona 5L-A door. fastener. including -a keeper mounted on the door jamb and formed with a recess extending horizontally therein and an opening commumcating with the recess,
' a latch rotatably mounted on the door for engagementwyith the keeper to lock the door 1n closed posltion, a U-shaped member having one free end pivotally connected to the ber therein for holdingthe door in partially open position.
6. A door. fastener: including a: keeper mounted on thefdoor ja1nb,, a. rotatable 1 spindle carried by the door,- a latch carriedby said spindle forengagementwith the keeper to lock the door in closed positioma pivoted member secured. tosaid latoli iormingan operat ng. handle therefor to. engage, ond sengage the latch from the keeper, sardmemher having. akeeper engagingportion adapted for cooperative engagement therewith to lock the door in p artly openposition when said latch .isi n ineffective position, and said latch carrying spindle having means cooperating with. saidumember for it limiting moVementthereof inthe. directim of'the door when the same is used as a latch operating. handle.
7. A door fastener including a keeper mounted on thedoor jamb, ,a latch mounted on the door for engagement .Withthe keeper .to lock the door in closed position, apivoterl member secured to the latch forming a -n operatmg handle therefor-to engage ordrsengage the-latch from the keeper being tut the r adapted for cooperative!engagement 1th.sa1d keeper to: look the door inpatt1allyopenposrtron and means assoc ated .Witlisaidr latch for limiting mevement of said. member toward, thetloor when used as a latcl op erating, handle,
