To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST J. Soiinnrzn, who have obtained my first citizenship papers of the United States, residing Galveston, in the county of Galveston and States of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Universal Locks and Latches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others'skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to looks and latches and is an improvement on my Patent No' 1,193,431, issued to me August 1, 1916.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device embodying a minlmum number of'parts which can be eiiectively used, as a gate latch or a doorlock and which can be used on either right or left hand swinging doors.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved lock and latch having an improved means for holding the latching member 1n locked position in engagement "with the kee )er and for releasabl 1 holdin 1:)
the latch member in active position prior to engaging the keeper. A further object oftheinvention is to provide an improved vertically sliding bolt for engaging the latching member for releasably holding the samein active positionvand for posltively holding the same in operative position in engagement with the keeper and an improved means for operating said bolt. A further ob ect of the invention is to pro vide an improved means for effectively hbldmg the bolt tor the latch against movement when the latch is in operative position in engagement with the keeper, so that the bolt cannot be operated without the use of a key.
A further object of-the invention is to provide a manually operated bolt for engaging the latch bolt, so as to hold the latch bolt against movement when the latch memher is in operative position.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the above character, which isdurable and eiiicient in.
use, one that is simple and easy manufacture, and one that can be pieced upon the market at a reasonable cost.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction,- arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustratedin the accompanying drawings, forminga part thereof, in which:

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numerall generally indicates the improved device which includes the body flcarried by the door or gate 3 and the keeper securedto the door frame or gate post 5.
The body 2 of the device includes a casing 6 in which is mounted the pivoted latch member I and the vertically sliding locking bolt S fEhecaSingE includes an attaching or base plate {having a. cover plate 10 detachably secured thereto by suitable retaining screws 11 which extend through the cover plate 10 and the base plate 9. Inward-i extending flanges '12 are formed on the edges of the base plate and serve to space the ase plate from the door and the upper and lower flanges are provided with outwardly extending attaching flanges 13, which are adapted to receivesuitshie fasten ing elements 14. Suitable reinforcing webs 15 are carried by the base plate and extend from one flange 12 to the other flange. The forward edge of thebase plate is provided with a. pair of spaced ears 16 which receive and support the pivot pin 17 on which is rotatably mounted the latch member 7. The
base plate 9 is slotted intermediate its ends and between the ears 16,-so as to permit free movement of the latch member in relation thereto.
The latch member 7 includes the shank 18 hating the vertical bore 19, which receives the pivot pin 17. The forward endof the shank has formed thereon the forwardly proj eeting substantially U-shaped keeper engaging member 20 and the keeper engaging member is formed relatively long so as to provide an enlarged surface for engaging the keeper. The terminals of the arms 21 of the U-shaped member are flared outwardly and beveled, as at 22, so as to facilitate the engaging of the member 20 with of the notches and the inclined wall 26 provides means whereby the bolt 8 may be slid upwardly during the closing movement of the gate when the U-shaped member 20 rides into engagement with the keeper 4. The inner surfaces of the cars 16 are provided with grooves 27, for the reception of the slide bolt 8 and spaced retaining ears 28 are pro vided for engagingthe side face of the bolt opposite to the face engaged by the cars 16. The lugs 28 and the groove 27 formed in the cars 16 form suitableguideways for the sliding bolt which includes the substantially flat body 29 having the inwardly extending slot 30 which receives the inner edge of the arcuate plate 23. The slot 30 has communicating therewith an upwardly extending slot 35, which in connection with the slot 30 detines a tongue 32 which is adapted to engage in the notches 24 and 25 for retaining the latch member 7 in active and inactive position. The tongue 32 is normally held in engagemcnt with the arcuate plate 23 by means of a leaf spring 33 which engages the outwardly extending feet 34 tormed on the terminals of the bolt. The rear edge of the .bolt 8 is provided with a pair of spaced cars 31, between which is positioned the cylindrical head 36 of the operating lever 37 which the pin 38, which serves to hold the cover plate against displacement. The outer end of the operating lever 37 is bent upwardly to provide an operating handle 40 by means of which the lever is readily manipulated. It can be seen that by throwing the lever downward, the bolt 8 will be raised and the tongue 32 lifted out of engagement with the notches and above the surface of the plate 23 and permit the latch 7 to readily swing on the pivot pin 17 and thus permit the gate or door to be opened. The base plate 9 is also provided with a transversely extending guideway 41, in which is slidably mounted a locking bolt 42, which is adapted to engage in a notch 43 formed on the inner edge of the bolt 8. The locking bolt 42 forms means for retaining the bolt 8 in its lowered position so as to positively hold the bolt against movement and the latching member in its locked position. The cover plate is provided with a keyhole slot 44 and the guideway is slotted as at 45 so that a key may be readily inserted in the casing so. as to engage the locking bolt 42 which is provided with a notch 45' for reception of the key. It can be seen that when the key is placed in the key slot 44 in the casing and turned the bolt will either be brought into or out of engagement with the bolt 8, as desired. The notch 43 is formed adjacent the lower end of the bolt 8 and a similar not-ch 46 is. provided adjacent the upper end of the bolt", for a purpose which will hereinafter more fully appear.
The inner face of the cover plate is also provided with vertically extending ribs 47 which are adapted to engage the outer face of the bolt 8, so as to form meansfor holding the same in operative position in the guideways. The base plate is also provided with suitable corner lugs 48, which are ongagedby the corners of the cover plate, so as to hold the same in position.
I The keeper 4 includes the base or attaching plate 49 which is provided with suitable openings 50 for the reception of the fastening elements 51. In operation of the improved device, the bolt 42 is retracted and the operating lever 40 swung downwardly which permits the latch to be swung on its pivot and the gate or door opened. Upon releasing of the lover 37 the bolt 8 will. be thrown downward by the spring 33 and the tongue 32 forced into engagement with the notch 25, which releasably holds the latch member 7 in its active position. When the gate is drawn closed, the U-shaped member 20 will receive the cylindrical-arm 53 which will swing the latch member 7 on its pivot and raise the bolt 8 upward owing to the inclined wall 26. lVhen the latch 7 has reachedits central position, the bolt 8'will drop and the tongue 32 will engage in the n0tch24; and hold the latch member in its locked position against movement. The locking bolt then may or may not be thrown into engagement with the bolt 8 for holding the same against movement. V
The latch as shown is adapted to be used on a left hand swinging door, and when the latch is to. be used on a right hand swinging door, the casing is reversed and the bolt 8 and lever 37 likeyvise reversed so that the tongue 32 will normally tend to gravitate into engagement with the notches 24 and 25.
In Figs. 8 to 10 there has been illustrated a form of the latch which is specially adapt ed to be used with a rim door lock and this construction is identical with the form illustrated in Figs. 1 to 8 with the exception that the casing is formed of lighter and thinner materialand that means is provided whereby the bolt 8 may be operated from either the inside or outside of the door and thata hand operated bolt is provided for engaging the bolt 8 so as to hold the same against movement and the hand operated bolt is so positioned that the same can only be operated from the inside of the door.
The cover plate 6 and the base plate 9 are provided with alined openings 55 in this form which rotatably receives the sleeve 56 having the squared bore 57 which receives the spindle 58 having the operating knobs 59 formed thereon for permittingthe ready turning of the sleeve. also formed thereon the outwardly extending arm 60 which carries the cylindrical lug 61, which is fitted between the cars 31 on the latch bolt 8. The spindle 58 is continued through the door is usual in the ordinary construction of rim door lock. A stcond guideway 62 is carried by the base plate 9 adjacent to the upper end thereof and the guideway slidably receives the hand operated bolt 63, which is. adapted to engage in the upper notch 46 formed in the latch bolt 8. The hand operated bolt 63 is provided with a reduced stem 63" which extends through the rear wall of the casing and is provided with a knob 64 for permitting the ready operation of the same.

Inpractice, I have found'that the t'orm of my invention illustrated in. the accom panying drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is themost eflicient and practical; yet;
realizing the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary,
I desire to emphasize that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required without sacrificing any of the set forth.
l hat I claim as new is: 1. In a look, a base plate, a latch member pivoted on the base plate, a supported keeper to be engaged by the latch member,- an extension carried by the pivoted end of the advantages of my invention as latch member and provided with recesses in its upper face, one ofthe side walls of one of the recesses being inclined; upwardly, a longitudinally movable member mounted on the base plate and. adapted to engage in the recess provided with the. inclined wall to retain the latch member in a position to move into engagement with the keeper, the longitudinally movable member being lifted out of said notchupon being engaged by, the inclined wall upon the pivotal movement of the latch member, and engaging the other notch to retain its latch member in locked enga qement with the keeper.
