Y This 'invention relate'sto door flatchesof thesliding'bolttypeyand has for on'eot its objects l'toprovide a novel Idevice of this character which shall be especially adapted for use on barn and cribidoors' and ...embodying 4'means adaptedfto prevent the retraction of itsrbolt by horsesror other cattle and by persons notiamiliar with its mechanism..
With the foregoing-and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 isV an elevational view illustrating the application of the door latch,
Figure 2 is a detail view in rear elevation V of the door latch, v
Figure Sis a sectional view taken on the vertical plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the vertical plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Figure 1, and L Figure 5 is a similar view taken on the horizontal plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, 'and designated in the several views of the accompanying drawing, by similar-,reference characters; r1`he latch comprises a casing 1 which, `as shown in the drawing, is adapted to be secured to a door 2 by bolts 3, and a keeper 4 which isV adapted to be secured to the Jframe 5 of the door by bolts 6. The casing 1 is provided with a horizontal opening 7 in which is slidably mounted a bolt 8, and the keeper 4 is provided with a recess 9 for the reception of the forward end of the bolt.l
The rearward end of the bolt 8 projects beyond the casing 1, and is provided with a knob or handle 10 through the medium of which the bolt may be readily projected or retracted. A pin 11 carried by the-bolt 8 and working in a closed end groove 12 in the casing 1, prevents the bolt from being casually withdrawn from the casing and limits the distance that the bolt may be moved duringy the` act 'of projecting/ it,L or moving it into engagement with the keeper 4. The bolt is adapted to be secured in projected position by tumblers 13 and 14 which are slidably mounted invertical openings 15 formed in the casing 1. The openings 15 intersect the opening 7 and extend through 1926. serial fNp. 16631131. f
the bottom of the casif'fng 1. 'The tunibler- MEM f is adapted `toi-enter a notch 16 in-thefupper v edge of fthe 'bolt 8, and is :provi-ded with a stem 117 Lextending Y downwardly therefrom and havingV litsllower end `positioned within tlie-plan'efof `thefcasiiig f1. ...The tumbler14 is'adapted to engage in a notch 18 in the lupper edge of the bolt 8, and is provided with a stem 19 extending downwardly therefrom and having its lower end Vprojecting ybelowthe corresponding end of the casing 1.
The tumbler 14 is provided with a notch 20 which receives the bolt 8 and is longer than the width of Vthe bolt. A notch 21 is formed in theflower edge of the bolt 8 for the reception of the tumbler 14 in the event that the tumblervshould be liftedtoo high when gianipulating the tulnblers to release the o t. Y Y
In'practice, the tumblers 13 and 14 rest upon thejupper edge of the bolt 8 when the latter is in retracted position. The pin 11 limitsthe distance thatthe bolt 8 may be moved, and when the latter reachesA the limit of its projected position the notches 16 or 18 will register with the tumblers 13 and 14 andthe tumblers willv gravitate into'the notchesand lock the bolt'against retraction by an animalv or person unfamiliar with the manner in which the Vtumblers must be manipula-ted; in order to release the bolt. The tumhlers 13 and 14Vmay be raised into holt releasing position by engaging the lower end of the stem 17 with a key, which may take the form of a pin, and the lower end of the stem 19 with the inger. If the tumbler 14 is raised too high it will engage 'n the notch 21 in the lower edge of the olt 8.
From the foregoing land accompanying drawing, it willbe apparent that the bolt 8 will immediately on-reaching its fully projected position be positively locked in such position, that a person not familiar with the mechanism of the latch cannotl effect the quick release of the bolt 8, and that the latch is simple and durable and may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
It shouldbe understood that thedrawing is merely illustrative and doesvnot Vpretend to give exact proportions. Furthermore, the. said drawing is illustrative of a preerred construction, it being my expectation that various changes and modifications may beV made wi hout departing from' the spirit and scopeof my invention,
That `is-claimed is :k Y
l.. A'latch comprising a casing, a bolt Slidably supported by the casing,- and provided in its upper and lower :edges with notches, 'a key operated tumbler, 'Y and a manually operable tumbler, said tumblers being adapted to engage in the notches in the 'upper edge of the bolt to secure the latter in projected position, and themanually operable tumbler being adapted to en- .ga-ger in the notch in the lower edge of the bolt provided said tumbler is moved through too .grezfitA ay distance during the operation Vthereof tofefiect the release of the bolt.
2. A latch comprising a casing, a 'bolt Y* nai-21,4137
slidably supported by the easing and provided inV its upper edge with a plurality of notches and in its lower edge with a single Y notch, a lkey operated tumbler adapted to engageY in one of the notches in the upper edge of the boltand located Wholly within feo the casing, and a manually operable tumbler 7 adapt-ed to engage in the other notch in the upper edge of the bolt and adapted to be engaged in the notch in the lower edge of the boltprovided it is moved through tooV
