DOOR LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. n, 1920.

ADOLF GABLENZ, OF L'D'IBECK, GERMANY.

Application filed December 11, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AnoLr GABLnNz, a citizen of Germany, residing at Lubeck, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an appliance for securing in position a door, or the like, when closed by means requiring manipulation, as for example a key, in which door latch certain novel and useful features of construction are comprised, and it consists in the construction, arrangement and operation of parts hereinbelow set forth.
In the drawing in which one embodiment of the invention is illustrated,
Fig. 1 represents a side elevation of the door lock;
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the removable plate detached;
Fig. 3 isa front elevation of the lock; and
Fig. 4 is a view in detail showing the side of the latch.
Fig. 5 is a detail showing the removable head of the lever.
The working parts of the door lock are contained within a lock casing which may be of any approved construction adapted to receive the said several working parts and to maintain them in proper position such as is ordinarily employed. The said casing has the usual removable plate 9 and face plate 4.
The numeral 1 denotes a latch consisting of a bar comprising a small central or recessed shank and enlarged head and rear portions, the said head consisting of a body portion having two side flanges 5 and 6 and a beveled face intermediate the latter in order that the lock may serve either as a right or left hand one according to the position of the latch as hereinafter described, which beveled face may co-operate with a striker plate or the edge of the door frame as is customary in appliances of this kind. The rear portion of the latch comprises a cross bar 23 positioned parallel to the flanges 5 and 6. r
The head of the latch works through a slot in the face plate 4 and the cross bar 23 travels between guides 7 and 8.
On the knob spindle 12 is rigidly mounted or sleeved, as by collar 21, a rollback lever or retracting lever 13 carrying at its free end a removable head 11 which latter works Specification of Letters Patent.

through a slot 10 in a plate 9 which lever may be manually actuated by the knob of the spindle 12.
The latch is maintained in its normal or extended position by means of a spring 20 which bears against the rear face of the cross bar 2-3 and keeps the latter in a position to abut against the head 11.
By turning the knob spindle 12 the lever 13 will be partially rotated and the head 11, which works in the recessed portion of the latchcomprising the relatively small shank of the same, will bear against the inner face of the cross bar 2-3 and cause the latch to be retracted or drawn inwardly.
By removing the head 11 and taking the latch out of the casing and turning it over and replacing it so that the beveled face of the latter shall occupy a reversed position from the one it formerly had, or so as to face the other way, and then reinserting the pin 11 in the lever 13, the said head will. be caused to bear against either the part 2 or the part 3 of the cross bar 2-3 according to Whether the lock is desired to be used as a right hand one or a left hand one, the element 11 being thus adapted to engage either the part 2 or the part 3 at will.
In order to lock the latch 1 in its extended position a key may be employed and inserted in the lock casing, which key serves to operate tumblers such as are ordinarily used, the outer one 19, which is maintained in an ele vated position by the spring 18 and held from undue upward movement by the stop 17, only being shown.
The movement of the key serves to operate the tumblers in the usual manner and to cause, by the sliding movement of the tumbler 19, the stud 16 on the rear wall of the lock casing to pass out of the lower portion of the slot 16 and to enter the upper part of the same as the tumbler falls.
The said movement of the tumbler 19 serves to operate the key operated locking bolt 14-, which in falling rests against the inner face of the enlarged head of the latch, thereby preventing any inward or retracting movement of the same.
What I claim as my invention is A latch bolt having at one end an enlarged head with side flanges with an intermediate beveled face whereby the bolt may serve either as a right or left hand one, and at the other end a cross bar, guides for said cross bar, a knob spindle, and a lever rigidly mounted thereon and having a removable head permitting the bolt to be removed and reversed.
2. A latch bolt having atone end an enlarged head With side flanges With an intermediate beveled face whereby the bolt may serve either as a right or left hand one, and at the other end a cross bar, guides for said crossbar, a knob spindle, a lever rigidly mounted thereon and having a removable head permitting the bolt to be removed and reversed, and a spring arranged to act on said cross bar.
3. A latch bolt having at one end an enlarged head'with side flanges with an intermediate beveled face whereby the bolt may serve either as a right or left hand one, and at the other end a cross bar, guides for said cross bar, a knob spindle, a lever rigidly mounted thereon and having a removable head permitting the boltto be removed and reversed, and a key operated bolt and a 00- operating tumbler, said last-named bolt 00- operating with the latch to prevent retracting movement thereof.
4:. In a device of the class described, a latch comprising a small central or recessed portion and an enlarged head and an enlarged rear portion, and a'retracting lever having a removable head to Work in the said recessed portion and to bear against either side of the recessed rear part of the latch at will.
- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
