Description

FRANK G-ODLEVTSKI, OF ST. LOUIS, IEISSUUTEL.
DOGR LUCK.
Application iled March 24, 1922. Serallo. 546,323.
To alt w/z-om it may conce/m.'
Be it known that l, FizANii Gronrnwsiir, citizen oi thev United States, residing St. Louis, in the county of tit. Louis and `:risate o't lviissouri, have invented certain new and useful limroY-.f'ements in Boor Locks, ot
which the :following is a specification.
rihis invention relates to locks. having more particular reference to a lock intended for use on the doors ot' houses, apartments, or buildings generally.
rEhe intention has for an object to provide a novel and improved lock ot this type,
which. combines the features ot simplicity ot construction and ditliculty in picking.
For ri. ther comprehension ot the invention. and et the objects and advantages thereoit, reference will be had to the following` description and accompanying' drawings,-
and to the appended claims in which the various novel features oit the invention are more particularly set forth.
l oif the drawings is a face view oit a look constructed according to my invenn tion.y showing it in place on ardoor.
Fig. 2 is a tace view of the lock alone with one face plate removed, this view being: taken looking in the opposite direction to Fig. l. j
3 is transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view ot the lock. removed from the door, this view being taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.`
is a detail perspective view of the key.
Referring` now to the drawings my improved lock comprises a casing or the rectangular shape common to door locks and comprising the opposed face plates l0 and ll which are each provided with two flanged edges l and ll which unite to form the edge walls of the'lock. ln use, the lock is mounted on the inner face ot the door, indicated at l2, with the plate l1 against the door, the two plates being held together on the door by means of screws 13 passing therethrough and into the door.
lithin the lock casing a bolt l is slidably mounted, and has a diminished end l5 which projects through a suitable opening 16 in one of the tianges l0 and is adapted to engage in the usual keeper of the door frame l?. This bolt end l5 is beveled on one Yface in the usual manner as at 1S. To guide the bolt 1.5 in its movement, a stud 20 is fixed to the plate l0 rand engages in a longitudinal slot 2l in the bolt. liixed in the inner end ot the bolt, and projecting through a horizontal slot 22 in the plate l0, is a stud 23 having a knob or head 24 on its projecting end whereby the bolt may be` retracted by hand, this slot 22 having atits rear end an upward oilset 25. The bolt l5 is urged forward by a bow spring 23 connected at one end to a stud 29 on the plate l0 and having its other end engaging in a notch 30 in the rear end4 of the bolt. lt will be noted thatthe disposition oit the spring 23 is such that it tends to press the bolt both` forwardly and upwardly so that when the bolt is retracted to bring the stud 23 in registry with the offset 25 in the slot 22, the rear endv of the bolt will be thrown upward to cause the stud to engage in this oiiset and so retain the bolt in its retracted position. The parts, also, are so proportioned that stud 2O is at this time lat the torward end o fvslot 2lin the bolt so that `the latter pivots on said stud, the opening 16 in the flange l0 being' vertically elongated slightly to allow the bolt end l5 to swing.
To receive the key, the plate ll is formed with a hollow boss 33 which extends through the door l2, the latter having upon its outer face a scutcheon plate 34 secured by screws 35, and formed with circular opening of similar size to the opening` 36 through boss 33. The key is shown in detail in Fig. 5 and comprises ashank 38 to the forward end or which is pivoted as at 39a bit `40. l/Vhen the key is inserted into the lock the bit 40 extends in alinernent with the shank 38 as shown in Fig. 5, being thrown to the operative position extending at right angles to the shank as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3 after insertion in the lock. The bit is yieldingly held in either position by means of a spring 4l in the shank 38 which engages the squared rear end of the bit in the manner usual with clasp knives.
rlhe bit 40 when in its angular position is disposed in front of a lug 43 projecting from the bolt l5, which lug it engages to retract the bolt when the key. is turned. To cause the bit 40 to be moved to its angular position when inserted in the lock the plate l0 is formed with a vertical slot 44 whose lower end is juxtaposed to the bore of boss 33. This slot is curved by an outwardly bowed spring 45 secured at one end as at 46 to the plate l0 while the forward end of plates of the lock in the manner common to key bits. To permit of the bit swinging to and from its angular position as the key is inserted and withdrawn the inner end of the key opening 36 is iared as at 5l.
lt is believed that the manner of operation of my improved lock will be readily understood from the above description. To facilitate the insertion of the key with the bit properly positioned to pass into the slot 45 the scutcheon vplate 34e is formed at the top with a pointed projection 84. When the key is inserted, the bit iengages the spring i5 and is moved upward, thev inward movement of the key continuing until the end of shank 38 engages the plate 10. The key is then partiallyturned, engaging the lug i3 o n bolt l5 and retracting thel latter. l/Vhen the bolt reaches the end of 'its retracting movement the stuc 23 thereon engages in the oil-"set 25 in slot 22 and holds the bolt retracted until it is released by pushing downward on the knob 2a. Movement or' the bit 40,l when the key is being rotated backward is limited by a stud 55 on the plate l0.
Having thus described my invention what ll claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows;
l. In combination, a lock comprising a casing, a bolt slidable therein, an element on said bolt adapted to be engaged by a keybit to retract the bolt, a key comprising a 4` shank and a pivoted bit, and means on the casing adapted to engage said bit to move it into loperative, relation to said element when the key is inserted in the lock, said means comprising a bowed spring carried by the casing. y y
2. ln combination, a lock comprising a casing having opposed face plates, a bolt slidable therein, a lug on said bolt adapted to be engaged by a key-bit to retract the bolt, a hollow boss formed on one of said 1 covering said slot, said springv being out-` wardly bowed between its ends and being7 secured at one end only to the'casing.
4f. In combination, a lock comprising a vcasing having opposed face plates, a bolt slidable therein, a lug on said bolt adapted to be engaged by a key-bit to retract the bolt, a hollow boss formed on one of said `face plates, the other face plate having a slot registering at one end with the bore of saidboss, and a flat spring extending along and covering said slot, said spring'being outwardly bowed between its ends and being secured at one end only to the casing, and a key having a pivoted bit adapted to be moved by said spring into operative relation to the said lug.
In testimony whereof ll have aflixedmy signature.
