Patented Nov. 3, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WINDOW SASH FASTENER Leo A. Perron, Sanford, Maine Application February 17, 1941, Serial No. 379,343
1 Claim.
This invention relates to window sash looks or fasteners, the primary object of the invention being to provide a device of this character which will operate to lock the window, with which it is used, when turned in a direction either to the right or to the left.
An important object of the invention is to provide a lock or fastener of this character which presents curved surfaces, to the end that it would be impossible to operate the lock or fastener by inserting a thin tool between the adjacent sash rails of upper and lower window sashes, to engage the movable member of the lock or fastener.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fastener of this character having cushioning means, adapted to cushion the movement of the sashes, particularly when the lower sash has been moved to the limit of its upper movement.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a window sash lock or fastener which will be simple in construction, and one which may be manufactured at a reasonable cost, due consideration having been given to the strength and durability of the lock or fastener.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein described, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a window lock or fastener constructed in accordance with the invention, and illustrating the device in its semilocked position.
Figure 2 is an elevational view of the lock or fastener, and illustrating the movable member of the lock or fastener, in its inactive or unlocked position.
Figure 3 is a sectional view through the movable member of the lock or fastener.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the upper rail of the lower sash of a Window, to which the movable member of the lock or fastener is secured. The reference character 6 designates the lower rail of the upper sash of the window, which, when the window is in its closed position, lies parallel with the upper rail 5 of the lower sash.
The movable member of the fastener comprises a base plate I, which is formed with openings to receive securing screws, whereby the base plate may be firmly secured to the upper rail of the lower sash.
Rising from the base plate 7, is a substantially large post 8 that has a wide base portion 9 that rests squarely on the base plate I, the post 8 being secured to the base plate, by means of the pin I a that extends through an opening in the base plate and post, the upper end of the pin extending through the upper portion of the body of the movable member of the fastener.
The movable member also embodies a hollow semi-dome-shaped body portion II, a portion thereof being cut-away providing a straight side I2, which is open, for purposes to be hereinafter more fully described.
As clearly shown by Figure 3 of the drawing, the lower edge of the semi-dome-shaped body portion is extended inwardly and upwardly as at I 3, defining a curved flange Id.
The semi-dome-shaped body portion II is formed with an enlarged cut-out portion through which the pin l0 extends, the enlarged cut-out portion providing a recess for the rubber block indicated at I5, which extends an appreciable distance above the body portion. This rubber block acts as a cushioning device to prevent damage to the lock or fastener, when the window sash carrying the lock or fastener, is moved upwardly to the limit of its upward movement.
The lock or fastener also embodies a keeper l6 which is secured to the lower rail .of the upper sash cooperating with the sash on which the movable member of the lock or fastener is secured. This keeper embodies an upstanding hook, so constructed that it will interlock with the flange M, as shown by Figure 1 of the drawing, securing the sashes against movement with respect to each other.
A finger piece indicated at I I is formed integral with the body portion, and extends therefrom, the finger piece providing means whereby the operator may readily rotate the movable domeshaped body portion to lock or unlock the window sashes.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, the body portion may be rotated either to the right or left, to move the body portion into locking relation with the keeper l6.
It Will also be noted that when the lock or latch is in its active or locked position, it would be impossible to insert a thin tool between the adjacent edges of the window sashes, to engage the movable member in a manner to rotate the movable member, unlocking the Window sashes from a point exteriorly of the window.
body portion pivotally supported on one of the window sashes, the lower edge of said body portion being extended inwardly and upwardly, providing a concealed elongated 'curved hook-like 5 member adapted to move into interlocked relation with a keeper secured to the adjacent window sash, securing the sashes together, and a finger piece extending from the body portion and by means of which the body portion may be ro- 10 tated to its locked or unlocked position.
