A TTORNEYS B. VOM EIG EN. BAG FRAME AND HINGE CONNECTION THEREFOR. APPLICATION FILED MAR. I3, I919.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENNO VOM EIGEN, OF NEVARK, NEW J ASSIGNOR T0 AUGUST GOERTZ 8a 00., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
BAG-FRAME AND HINGE CONNECTION THEREFOR.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENNO \"OM EIGEN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Frames and Hinge Connections Therefor; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates, generally, to improvements in bag-frames; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel hinge-connection for the framesections thereof, with a view of providing the usual bag-frame with a springhinge connection which will permit the frame-sections to bereadily'brought into their closed and opened relations, and at the same time will act as a stay to positively retain the frame-sections in their opened relation.
The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide a bag-frame, the frame-sections of which arevmade with spring-hinge connections for the usual purpose of pivotally connecting the frame-sections, and fat the same time will provide a connection which acts as a stay to maintain the frame-sections in an open relation andto prevent accidental closing of the mouth of the bag, while at the same time providing for the fullest access to the interior of the )ther objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description hereinafter more fully set forth.
With the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel bag-frame and spring-hinge connection therefor hereinafter more fully set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and then finally embodied in the Specification of Letters Patent. Patented EIay 11 1920.
Application filed March 13, 1919.

clauses of the claim which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bagframe made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention, the hinged or pivotally connected frame-sections being shown in their closed relation; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of one of the hinged portions of the frame-sections; and Fig. 3 is a similar view ofthe same, looking in the direction of the arrows 3-3 in said Fig. 1, said last two-mentioned views being made on an enlarged scale.
Fig. t is a vertical sectional representation taken on line 4 -h in said Fig. 3, said view being made on a largerscale; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the parts represented in said Fig. 3, also on a larger scale, certain parts of the hinge-connection being represented in section; and Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional representation of the same, said section being taken on line 6-6 in said Fig. 4.
Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional representation, similar to the section represented in Fig. l, but showing the two frame-section portions turned at a right angle.
Fig. 8 is a horizontal section, taken on line 8-8 in said Fig. 4:; and Fig. 9 is a similar section, taken on line 9-9 in said Fig. 4c. 7
Similar characters of reference are employed in the said above described views, to
indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference-characters l and 2 indicate the two frame-sections of a bagframe, the said sections being respectively made with the end or pivot- members 3 and 4. As shown in-the several figures of the drawings, the lower end-portion 5 of each pivot-member 3 is made with an inwardly extending chambered portion, as 6, preferably pressed by means of a suitable die, directlyout of the metal of which the said pivot-member of the frame-section is made, the closed face-portion 7 of the said chambered member 6, being formed with an outwardly projecting rib or projection, as 8, which extends diagonally across said faceportion 7 and is provided with a centrally disposed hole or perforation 9. 1n crosssection, the said rib or projection 8 is convexly formed, as will be clearly evident from an inspection of Figs. 3, 6, 8 and 9 of the drawings.
Suitably secured to the lower end-portion 10 of each pivot-member 4-, by means of rivet lugs, as 12, see Fig. 3, or any other suitable fastening means, is a plate 11, said plate being provided at its free end with a laterally extending pivot-member, as 13. This pivot-member 13 is also provided with a rib or projection, as let, which extends diagonally across said member, said rib or projection 14, in cross-section, being also convexly formed, and its concave surfaceportion 15, when the two frame- sections 1 and 2 are in their closed, or in their opened relation, registers with the convex surface portion of the rib or projection 8, substantially as shown more particularly in Figs. 8 and 9 of the drawings. Likewise, the said rib or projection 14 is made with a perforation or hole 16 in registration with the perforation or hole 9 in the rib or projection S, and secured in said perforation or hole 16, substantially in the manner illustrated in Fig. i of the drawings, is the reduced shank-portion 18 of a pintle or pivot-pin 17. The main shank-portion of each pintle or pivot-pin 17 extends through and is rotatably disposed in the perforation or hole 9 of the projection or rib 8, with its main portion extending through the interior of the chambered portion 6 and from the open part 19 thereof, as shown in Figs. 4, 7 and 9. Upon the projecting end, the main shank-portion of each pintle or pivot-pin 17 has a head or enlargement, as 20, and encircling each main shank-portion, and disposed between the said head or enlargement 20 andthe inner wall of the face-portion 7 is a helical spring 21, the purpose of which is to bring the two registering ribs or projections 8 and 14c of each pair of pivotportions, preferably by means of holding or clamping lugs 22 and 23, each lug 22 projecting into and through a perforation or slot 24 and each lug 23 embracing the lower marginal edge-portion 25 of the end-portion 5, and said lugs being securely clamped against the inner faces of the respective end-por- 3, 4L, 6 and 7 of the drawings.
Of course it will be clearly understood that any other means may be employedfor securing these ornamental caps in position. Having in the foregoing described the gen eral construction of the bag-frame and the spring-hinge connections for the respective frame-sections therefor, it is thought that any further description of the operatlons of said connections is deemed unnecessary, as such operations will be clearly understood from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings.
I am fully aware, that changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the said devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
