Mergott Company, Newark, N. J., a corporation of Delaware Application July 22, 1936, Serial No. 91,817
4 Claims.
This invention relates to frames for hand bags, and more particularly to a frame which provides a wide opening bag.
The usual hand bag frame comprises a pair of U-shaped members which are hingedly connected and permit a relatively small opening of the bag. Due to the narrow opening of such hand bag, it is often inconvenient to locate and extract articles from the bag.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a frame for hand bags which enables a wide opening of the bag and which lends itself to the production of numerous ornamental designs.
A further object is the provision of a frame permitting the wide opening of a hand bag, which is simple in structure and capable of being produced at a relatively low cost.
These and other advantageous objects, which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of frame members used in a hand bag frame embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a side view of part of a hand bag provided with a frame embodying my invention, the bag being in a closed condition,
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of a bag provided with my improved frame member, the bag being Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a frame for a hand bag embodying my invention,
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a hand bag provided with a frame embodying my invention, the hand bag being open,
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of frame members when the bag frame is closed,
Fig. 7 is a perspective view, partly in section, of a portion of a frame member, and i Fig. 8 is a view of a section of the hinge portion of the frame member.
Referring to the drawings, in Fig. 4, the hand bag frame is shown tocomprise four frame members of substantially identical shape. Each of the frame members has a vertical portion 9 and a portion ID at an acute angle to the vertical portion 9, the portion I0 extending downwardly. The portions 9 and I0 include a side wall I I which has integral therewith a top wall l2 provided with a downturned flange l3. Extending from the bottom of the side wall II are tabs I4 by means of which bag covering material, or inlays having bag covering material attached thereto, can be secured to the side wall II.
The vertical portion 9 of one of the frame members is provided with a pair of spaced bearings l5 and the vertical portion of the adjacent frame member is provided with a bearing l6 which fits in between bearings l5, see Fig. 1. The bearings l5 and I6 receive a hinge pin H.
The portions ll] of adjacent frame members are pivotally connected by means of projections of the topwall 12 to provide lips l8 which receive a grommet 19 to form a hinge joint.
Referring to Figs. 4 and 5, it will be seen that When the bag is closed, the pairs of frame members are substantially parallel, see dotted lines in Fig. 5. When the bag is open, as shown in Fig. 4, the arrangement of the frame members and the manner in which they are hingedly connected provides a wide opening for a hand bag which enables convenient access to the contents thereof. The vertical portions 9 of the frame provide rigidity and strength to the hand bag and also the vertical hinging of adjacent frame members prevents distortion.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a simple and rigid frame for hand bags which enables a wide opening of the bag, and due to the similarity of the parts, can be manufactured at relatively low cost.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously many embodiments may be constructed including many modifications, without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a frame for handbags, four frame members, each of said frame members having a vertical portion and a downwardly directed portion at an acute angle to said vertical portion, the vertical portions of adjacent frame members being provided with bearings, a vertical pivot pin passing through said bearings for hingedly connecting said vertical portions, and vertical pivot means for hingedly connecting the downturned portions of adjacent frame members.
2. In a handbag, a frame enabling a wide opening of said bag, said frame comprising four frame members, each of said frame members having a vertical portion and a downwardly directed portion at an acute angle to said vertical 1y positioned bearing fitting between'said spaced bearings, and a vertical pivot pin inserted in said bearings for hingedly connecting said adjacent frame members.
4. In a frame for a handbag, four frame members of substantially the same shape, each of said frame members having a vertical portion and an angularly directed portion, the vertical portion of one of said frame members having a pair of spaced bearings and the vertical portion of the adjacent frame member having a centrally positioned bearing fitting between said spaced bearings, a vertical pivot pin inserted in said bearings for hingedly connecting said adjacent frame members, and vertical pivot pins for hingedly connecting the downturne d portions of adjacent frame members,
