BAG-FRAME FASTENER.
Application filed July 31, 1924. Serial No. 729,234.
rlhis invention relates to bag frame securing devices and more particularly-to such types as are provided with snap catches in addition to a positive locking means.
One of the objects of the invention is in the provision of a frame having rigid raised parallel plates arranged in register on each frame side, one of the plates having an opening to receive a spring knob carried by the mating side whereby the sides are normally held in closed relation.
A further purpose is to provide 1n the same plates a positive lock, actuat-ed by a. handled rotary element, whereby the frame sides are held in lined engagement until voluntarily released by definite action.v
Another aim is in the production of a double engagingV means for fastening a bag frame, onebeing spring actuated and the other manually controlled, both being effective and tending to embellish the bag without materially increasing the cost of construction.
rlhese several objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the annexed drawing, forming a consequential part of this disclosure, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view of a conventional type of bag frame, showing` the application of the invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Figure 1, parts being omitted to avoid confusion.
Figure l is a rear elevational view of one of the locking plates in detail.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the numerals 10 and 11 designate the respective bag frame side members, which are of the usual channelled type connected at their angularly turned lower ends by hinges. not shown, and composed of sheet metal die formed into the customary shape.
The frame side 10 has a rigid upstanding plate 12 die struck from sheet metal and presenting any approved outline, includinga level base from which project prongs 13 suited to enter corresponding perforations in the upper element o the frame side to be of a plate 17, extending coincident in length and parallel with the plate 12, but of a lesser height, the plate 17 being rigidly fixed on the frame side 11 by prongs 18 in the Inanner previously described.
Formed in the plate 17 below and in register with the stem 16, is a slot 19 having a square top and open at the bottom or base edge of the plate. Y
The plate 12 is pierced in register with the slot 19 to rotatably receive a spindle 2O having at one end an enlarged circular head 21 drilled upon opposite sides to receive a pair of inturned lugs 22 formed on the forked portion of a handle 28 normally pendant due to its pivoted connection with the head.
A lrnob 211, on the other end of the spindle 20, is flattened on one side, as at 25, so that when the spindle is rotated by its handle to bring the flattened side uppermost, it may be Vpassed through the slot 19 and thereafter, by turning the spindle, the overhanging shouldered portion of the knob may be engaged with vthe outer surface of the plate 1137,1 above the slot in th-e manner of a catch The spindle is held from moving lengthwise in the plate 12 by a collar 26 brazed lor otherwise rigidly secured to it, the collar being'seated on the inner side of the plate 12 and is guided circumferentially by a plate bent into a substantial U shape, one forked prong 27 of which is disposed on the inner side of the plate 12, its loop 28 passing through a recess in the bottom edge of the plate and the other prong 29 is pressed against the outer side of the plate 12.
Pressing against the inner shouldered end of the spindle head 21 is a bent flat spring 30, its ends extending equally outwardto bear against the outer surface of the plate 12 and its upper portion bent inwardly to e' the inprovide stops 3l positirely liniitin?j nzu'd movement oi the spindle.
The lonerrnost centr-nl portion ot the spring' 3() is curved outmirdl)`- ziet-ing' to reinforce or stillen the central portion ot the spring' so :is to present n tint bearing `for the head 21.
In operation, to either open or close the beg, the handle L3 will be turned to rotate the knob n hell: turn, bringingI the tlnt tened portion uppermost and then 'torcing' the globular elenient l5 into or out ot the opening 14. as muy be required.
Obviously the element l5 :iets es :in etiicient snep Yfastener in securing the bug traine sides, its action being pronounced `and :is etiectire ns such types oit' fasteners cnn be nmde, operating Without distorting the bug in any manner.
It will be 'further understood that when the locking knob 2l is in the position shown in Figure i2 the beg is positively loclied to re sist all attempts at intrusion until the knob is rotated int-e a releasing position.
Although We have described our iinprovements with considerable detail and with respect to e certain particular 'torni ot' the invention, it is not desired to be limited to such details since inziny changes and inediticutions may Well be mede Without departing from the spirit und scope ot the invention in its broadest aspect.
