Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELIAS IV. Bnnwn'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pleasant Mount, in the county of Wayne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying draw- This invention relates to new and useful improvements in buckles and more particularly to what will be hereinafter known as a third bar buckle. the main object of the invention being the provision of a buckle wherein the strap, to which the buckle is attached, is secured to a crossbar which is separate from the cross bar upon which the tongue is mounted so as to eliminate the necessity of cutting the strap for the tongue as is the case with the buckles 1n use at the present time.

Another object of the present invention is the provision of a buckle of the above character which will possess advantages 1n points of efficiency and durability, is 1nexpensive to manufacture and, at the same time, is simple in constructlon and operation.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a buckle constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a top plan view illustrating a modified form of the in vention; and Fig. at is a longitudinal sectional view of the modified form.

In the construction of my improved buckle, I provide a substantially rectangular body which is generally indicated in the accompanying drawing by the numeral 1. One of the transverse ends of the body is adapted to form the strap bar 2 upon which the strap 3 is mounted, said strap being secured to the bar by having its end wrapped around said bar and then arranged upon the body of the strap and rigidly held in place by means of the transverse rows of stitching 4:.

Formed integral with the side portions of the body 1 and extending transversely across the open space of the body, is what will be hereinafter known as the tongue bar which is indicatedv in the accompanying drawing by the numeral 5. The tongue'bar 5 is arranged near the end of the body which forms the strap bar 2, but in' spaced relation with said strap bar. Pivotally mounted upon'the tongue bar 5 is the retaining tongue 6, the outer end ofwhich is adapted to be inserted through the opening 7 in the strap 7 and is held in place by the strap 7. The outer free end of the tongue, when arranged in its operative position, bears upon the roller8 which is mounted upon the cross bar 9. The

- roller is rotatably mounted upon the bar 9,

so that the end of the tongue will not engage the roller in substantially the same place, but will engage the roller in various places around its peripheral center and thus prolong the life of the same. The tongue 6 is retained in an inoperative position by means of the spring 10, the intermediate portion of which is substantially U-shape in form and bears against the under face of the tongue, while the ends thereof are coiled upon the bar 5 and secured thereto, adjacent the side portions of the body.

The ends 10 of the spring 10 are arranged between the spaced lugs 11, formed on the bar 5, and said lugs are adapted to be pressed against the ends of the spring and have been arranged in position to retain the spring in place, thus when the tongue is arranged in an operative position, as shown in Fig. 2, the spring will be placed under tension to return the tongue 6 to its normal position, when the same is released.

It will be readily apparent that my improved third bar buckle is far superior to the general form of buckle now in use in view of the fact that the strap 3 is not weakened by forming a hole in the same for the reception of the tongue 6, as is the case of the buckles now in use.

In Fig. 3, I have shown a slightly modified form of buckle in which the body of the buckle is formed U-shaped and the side portions are connected adjacent their ends by the tongue bar 5. The ends of the side portions of the body are flattened as shown at 12 and are provided with the openings 13 to receive the headed pinl which serves as the strap bar to which the strap 3 is connected. After the pin 14: has been arranged within the openings 18, the end thereof opposite the head is flattened to retain the same in place. In this modified form of the invention, the construction of the same, other than that just described, is the same as the preferred form of the invention.

From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be apparent that I have provided a simple and durable buckle wherein the same is provided with a third bar to which the tongue is attached, thus eliminating the necessity of cutting the strap, to which the buckle is attached, to extend the buckle therethrough. It will also be apparent that I have provided a simple and durable buckle which is extremely simple in its construction and, at the same time, can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a comparatively low cost.

While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that Various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successively carrying my invention into practice, without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus described this invention, what I claim is A device of the class described including a substantially rectangular frame, a tongue bar arranged transversely across said frame adjacent an end thereof, a tongue mounted for pivotal movement upon said bar at substantially the longitudinal center thereof, spaced parallel lugs formed adjacent opposite ends of the tongue bar and disposed rearwardly relative to the tongue, a coil spring having its ends Wound around the tongue bar upon opposite sides of the center thereof and having their extreme ends arranged between the lugs, said lugs being pressed against the end portions of the spring, the intermediate portion of said coil spring being bent to form a U-shaped loop adapted to bear against the under side of the tongue, whereby to normally retain the same in a raised position.
