Gnrsna'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elmo, in the county of Dickinson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful. improvements in separable Fasteners, of whichthe following is a specification, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings. 1 a

This invention relatesto certain improvements inseparable fasteners and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especiallydesigned and adapted for usein Connection with the overlying marginal portions ofcurtains such as employed upon-alitomobiles or other vehicles; and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general char acter which maybe readily assembled or separated from eitherside of the curtains. It is also an "object of the invention to provide a novel and improved separable fastener of a head and socket type and wherein pivoted jaws are adapted to coact with the head and wherein each of said pivoted jaws is provided with spaced arms adapted to be positioned at 'opposite sides of a curtain or the like so that said jaws may be readily and conveniently operated from either side of the curtain.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved fastener whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating a separable fastener constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position;

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, C 'denotescurtains having marginal portions adapted for overlying relation and carried by the marginal portion of one of said curtains is the headed member or stud 1 adapted to be directed through an open ing 2 formedin the adjacent marginal por tion of the second curtain.

Over-lying the opposite faces of the second curtain are the concavo-convex disks or plates 3 provided at their centers with open ings Jr adapted to register or a-line with the opening 2 in the second curtain and the marginal portions of the disks or plates 3 are provided with the prongs or lingers 5 adapted topenetrate the second curtain and to be bent back upon the plates or disks 3 so that said disks or plates will be effectively secured to the second curtain.

Disposed through the rear portion of the plates ordisks 3 andalso directed through the marginal portion of the second curtain C is the removable pintle 6 herein disclosed as comprising a sheet of metal rolled into substantially a cylindrical form and having its opposite ends provided with the tongues 7 adapted to be bent to overlie the outer faces of the disks or plates 3, whereby saidpintle 6 is effectively maintained inapplied position. It will be understood however, that if preferred the pintle may be maintained in applied position in any desired manner.

Pivotally engaged with the pintle 6 are the jaws J and said aws are constantly urged one toward the other through the medium of the spring member 8 herein disclosed as a resilient wire having its intermediate portion coiled, as at 9, to encircle the pintle while the opposite end portions of the spring 8 bear against the tails 10 of the jaws J.

As herein embodied, each of the jaws J is formed of sheet metal and bent upon itself in overlying relation with the inner margins of said overlying portions provided with the lateral extensions 11 having registering openings 12 through which the pintle 6 is directed. In assembling the device the extensions of one aw are interposed between the extensions of the second jaw as is believed to be clearly disclosed in the accompanying drawings and the free end portions of the spring 8 contact with the bend portions of the tails 10 of the jaws J.

The overlying portions of the tail of each jaw are provided with the extensions separated throughout their lengths and which extend beyond the disks or plates 3 and arranged at opposite sides ofthe second curtain C, said extensions 14 terminating in the laterally directed parts 15 herein disclosed as being formed by rolling the outer end portions of said extensionsback upon themselves. These parts 15 afi'ord effective means whereby inward movement may be imparted to the tails .10 of the jaws J in order to separate said jaws when it is desired to disconnect the overlying portions of the curtain C. By having the extensions of the tails arranged at opposite sides ofthe second curtain it will be at once self-evident that the curtains may be disconnected from either, side thereof.

The first named curtain immediately adjacent the head or stud 1 and at the same side thereof is provided with the finger loop 16 which is adapted to facilitate the insertion of the head or stud between the jaws J i when a person is standing at the side of the curtains toward which the stud or head 1 extends.

From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a fastener constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some changeand modification without material departure from the flo iiea of this patent may be obtained for principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting "myself to the precise arrangement and formatlon of the several parts hereln 7 shown in carrylng out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim:

1. In separable fastener, a socket member adapted to be secured to a support, and relatively movable jaws arranged within the socket member, each of said jaws being provided with extensions adapted to be arranged at opposite sides of the support.

In a separable fastener, a socket member adapted to be secured to a support, relatively movable jaws arranged within the socket member, each of said jaws beingproj V vided with extensions adapted to be ar rangedat opposite sides of the support, and means for constantlyurging the jaws one toward the other. i

3. In a separable fastener, a'socket mem ber, adapted to be connected to a support, pivoted jaws arranged in said socket member, means for constantly urging said jaws onetoward the other, and spaced extensions carried by each of the jawsand extending exteriorly of the socket and adapted to be positioned at opposite sides of the support.
